Minix -> Comments please (11/27/2006 14:32:53)

Please take a look if you can and let me know how this appears to you.

I've looked at it on IE's, Firefox and MSN 9 browsers and it seems to hold together, even when I change text size views.

Thanks if you find anything or have any comments on the look of it.

Also appears to work fine in Opera 9.

Only thing I'd think about changing would be to add just slightly more padding between the left/right hand side of the text and the borders and I find the hover effect for the navigation doesn't stand out well against the background blue - maybe reverse the background/text colour?

(I guess you're aware that you've got a horizontal scrollbar at 800px width)

Thanks for the comments. Opera was the one I was worried about. Still working on the hover colors and I think you're right, although the scheme is a client preference.

As far as the 800 scroll, I'm under the impression that 800 width resolution is no longer something to be concerned about with the large majority of monitors at 1024. I've been told by those with much greater understanding of the standards and practices not to design with 800 in mind. Is that right?

Weeeeell - it depends. Like everything in this business you have to make a choice about who you think is right or wrong with this sort of thing depending on your own feelings, the wishes of the client, their market blah blah blah. There are about 50 different opinons on this.

I think it's fair to say that these days the most common screen resolution is probably 1024. That's not to say that everyone with a 1024 screen actually has it maximised to that width.

I've done 3 websites within the last 6 weeks for clients where I've gone to their homes/businesses to train them on how to use them (they were CMSs) and found that even though they had wide screens they had them set to a lower resolution (800px). These businesses were all run by people who you'd probably describe as in late middle age for clients who are unlikely to be teenagers either. So in that scenario, the sites definitely needed to work at the lower resolution.

If you're designing a site that will probably be aimed at a slightly younger market I think it's safe to go with the wider screen width.

Course the safest thing would be to use a fluid design that works for everything from a PDA upwards!

I think it's one of those things where you take an educated guess based on the likely market for the site.

Stats say in the UK 27% still on 800x600 no matter what their monitor is capable of. Two current clients have their machines deliberately set to 800 as they say 1024 is too small.
