"New window" problems - 12/1/2006 2:18:10
My website, www.lanimilbus.com, has just undergone major updates, one of which being that the thumbnails in my photo galleries, when clicked, open in a new window instead of the same one. I changed this by opening the real.htm file corresponding to each specific gallery, right clicking a thumbnail in the gallery, choosing Hyperlink Properties, clicking Target Frame, changing it from "Page Default (none)" to "New Window," then clicking "Set as page default" so that all of the thumbnails will open in a new window. This seemed fine at first, until I realized that doing this caused some other links on my gallery pages to open in new windows as well, which I don't want.
I have links to each photo gallery page both above and beneath the gallery, and while the links above the gallery still open in the same page like I want them to, the ones beneath the gallery all open in a new page, which I don't want them to do. I tried copying and pasting the links above the gallery over the ones beneath it, but still had the same end result. I tried right clicking one of the bottom page links and changing the target frame from _blank to _top, then setting that as default, but, when published, everything is still the same. The thumbnails still open in new windows, the links on top still open in the same window, and the links on the bottom all still open in a new page. The only way I've found to get the links at the bottom to open in the same window (besides going back to the real.htm file and changing it back to the way it was so that the thumbnails open in the same window again as well) is to click each individual link and change it to _top instead of _blank.
The problem is that there are 38 links beneath the photo galleries (36 pages numbered 1 through 36 and a previous and next link) and I would have to individually click those 38 links and change their target frame on each of the 36 pages. That would mean manually individually right-clicking and changing the target frame on over 1,300 links. Is there any easier solution than that? Please help; I'll have quite a few viewers this weekend and I'd really like my site to be fixed ASAP. Thanks!

Cor blimey, wall of text! :D

Alec, unfortunately, there is no easy way about that. If you set a page default, thats how the links will be thoughout the page. Then going back to alter individual links is the only way as far as i know with photoshop.

You just have to be careful when doing your links

Well, the ones at the top don't change when I set "_blank" as a page default, so I figured there must be some way to get the links at the bottom to be like the links at the top...is there some reason why only the links at the bottom open in new windows?

Alec, here's the good news, yup it can be changed and fairly easily too.

If you look at the code for the page you'll see there's a difference in the way the links look.

At the top they're all
<a href="../naturephotosoct06/naturephotosoct06.htm" >2</a>,

at the bottom
<a href="../naturephotosoct06/naturephotosoct06.htm" target="_blank">2</a>,

the difference being the target="_blank"

so what you need to do is get rid of all the target="_blank"

If you're using FP2003 then it's fairly easy but before you do anything. make a copy of your site.

open in FP
In folder list view (ie with no pages open)
Edit>Replace

Replace target="_blank"> with >

check the box for all pages or if the pages you want to change are all in the same folder, select the folder then check the selected pages box

check the box for Find in source code

then take a deep breath and hit OK

It will go through every page you have chosen and make the change (that's why I said back your site up as you may find it changes other pages you don't want done)

Upload one page to your host and test it, if all OK upload the lot.

It's a shame you're not using includes for the top and bottom as you'd only have to change one file.

I tried that on just one page at first, and I replaced every instance of target="_blank"> with >, then I saved the page and published it, but the links at the bottom still opened in new windows. So I opened the page again and checked the HTML and the target="_blank"> codes were back there again. I tried replacing them and uploading the page again, but still got the same result. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Not that I can see, how weird is that.

Thought about removing the links at the bottom completely? It doesn't really need them.
