Using Server Side Includes with EWD - 12/4/2006 14:34:53
Hello all! I am creating a new site using EWD and am attempting to create a navigation structure that will be easy to maintain after my new site goes live. I know that I will have to add and update links. I'm trying to think through the best way to do this. I want my new site to be based solely on html/css and want it to be W3C compliant and googlebot friendly from the beginning, so I don't want to use proprietary code. Besides, using old FP code in an editor that is geared towards "pure" html and CSS seems wrong. On the other hand, I do want to create a menu bar in one place and maintain it in one place as opposed to having to change 20 web pages every time I add or change a menu item. Should I use server side include files with EWD? The host I'm using for that side supports them with a .shtml suffix. Shoud I avoid the use of FP webbots with EWD? I can insert the code to add them, but that seems to defeat the purpose of going to EWD. Will avoiding proprietary code, like webbots, help googlebot and other search engine robots read and index my pages more easily? I'd welcome any suggestions! Thanks, Grant

A few ideas. Why don't you make a Dynamic Web Template. That will solve you probelms. You could find one of the stock ones you like and modify it to make it your own. http://www.firstexpression.com/css-tools/template-setup.htm You could allways just use an ASP or PHP include file. Good Luck Rich

I considered that, but it creates a bunch of proprietary code in FP. Do you know if proprietary code has an impact on the robots that index web pages?

Will do. Thanks for the information about the code. I was somewhat concerned.
