I want my home page to look stylish not clunky - 12/4/2006 21:40:26
Can anyone help the frontpage novice please? :).

httphttp://www.nul-points.net

This is one of my sites that is lauded for its content and gets links etc (for content) but I can't get the look of the home page right. I bought a frontpage template and I'm happy with it for my many sub pages as they are about content.

However my home page still sucks whatever I try to do. I have a nav bar on the left which is driven by the template and links and I am happy with. However, the remainder of the home page (which is basically about a pop music theme site) is a complete mess. I want to draw visitors attention to about 10 pages with pictures and short snappy text for each. As you can see if you click on the link, layout tables are not a specialty of mine :). Can anyone advise me on making that mess look more cool? :)

And no wonder, the content is outstanding. This is now in my favourites :) . I had no idea that Plastic Bertrand or Julio Iglesias were part of Eurovision.

Re the home page, I think the coloured blocks tend to make it a little clunky. The Nul Pointers page (and Trivia Central etc) works well so maybe you could try a similar thing for the entry page? The marquee may be better sliding in and then stopping.

I'm probably the last person to advise about 'cool' though :)

Three things that spoil the look on the homepage - the coloured boxes (ditch them - they don't match anything else), and the scrolling marquee and hit-counter (very '90s).

I'd get rid of all the coloured boxes too. You don't need them you have links in the menu.

I'd build on your first bit which is good.

Put some more text there to help the Search Engines and lead people into the site.

Over the years the Eurovision Song Contest has presented the weird and the wonderful, the soon to be superstars, the soon to be forgotten and the just downright odd.

There have been arguments over the voting, fun made of the presenters and their clothes, catchphrases created and the desperate wait to see who goes away with "Nul Points".

How well do you know your Eurovision? We're willing to take a bet that you don't know as much as you think you do. Take a look through these pages and discover the joys and the heartaches you've missed.

Or something along those lines and stick a few of the more unusual images in. Under each image you could have a question or caption. "Who is this" "What year did this happen?" and then let people go find it.

Hi John

I think many of the images need to be sharper - and they'd perhaps look better if they were bordered or shadowed or something.

The banner image to the right is fine but the rest of the banner area has an awful lot of whitespace when this site is viewed on higher res monitors. The page title is also very lacking in visual appearance.

One more... The navigation links have no left padding, which is somewhat off-putting.

I can see why you feel the need for a little more pizazz! Something 'sparkly' is needed here. Hope you can achieve it somehow. :)

Thanks Rick :) I've corrected the padding on the left links, that was a novice error :) Working on your other tips too!
