womble -> RE: backlinks without using reciprocal links (8/3/2007 6:32:58)

Without wishing to re-start the whole backlinks v content debate again [;)], I have to say in my own experience, in the past, that content's been more important to me than backlinks, though a fair bit of my stuff's been very specific, and you could say niche sites, so I admit my experiences aren't probably typical. That said, one of my sites which until fairly recently (probably the last 6 months or so) didn't have much in the way of links. The site did fairly well in the rankings, I guess partly on the content, partly on having a fairly relevant URL, and maybe a few natural links. About six months ago though I did start looking more seriously at SEO on this particular site, which also has an attached forum so we've got regularly changing relevant content, and I started looking at where I could legitimately link to. Most of the links I've got now are reciprocal, though a few are one way, but the one thing they all have in common is that they're either related to the subject matter of the site, or in a similar area. Interestingly, I've been noticing recently that when I check my stats and server logs, I've had a huge jump in bandwidth usage, and number of unique visitors. While some of the traffic I've been getting has come from search engines, the majority of it's coming from the links I've established, and there's also been a rise in the length of time visitors are hanging around on the site. It's targetted traffic that's made a big difference to me. I've also been paying a lot more attention to the most visited pages, which I've identified through the logs, because often the landing page hasn't been what I'd assumed would be a landing page, and that's meant that I've been able to slightly tweak my content to up the keyword density just slightly. It's going to be interesting over the next few months to watch the stats and the rankings and see how the new strategy affects things.
