My infamous battle with Instaspace.com... - 12/8/2006 14:58:06
Hey folks,
How goes it and thanks for all your previous input to my previous posts. All thanks goes out to the fpwebmaster team.

Alrighty here goes:

How can I upload and replace existing files on the server without corrupting the fp extensions?

What is the difference in frontpage 2003 and smartftp's FTP system?

If you want to keep the FPSEs intact then you need to use FPs Publish facility. As soon as you ftp you corrupt the FPSEs and have to reinstall.

Behind the scenes nothing. It's cosmetic. Both will screw your FPSEs.

okay, so in fp 2003, there is an option to publish via ftp or sharepoint/frontpage services. which should I use?

And what if I cant get access using the fp username/password?

My server admin has changed the un/pw many times....

hmmm..... my server admin is telling me to post via smart ftp...

Jaybee,
what do you suggest I do? My server admin is disgruntled, bc, he reinstalled fp ext. so many times.

I can publish via frontpage on ftp, but not on sharepoint/frontpage option.

Should I do that? or publish via the second option: https://

If you are using FPSE (such as hit counters, forms, guestbooks, a discussion area, etc..) then you must use the Publish option WITHOUT FTP. If you are not using any of those features, then you will be fine using any type of FTP.

I publish sites using FrontPage all the time without having to worry about FPSE being corrupt...

It sounds like the reason your FPSE are corrupt is due to uploading via FTP.

Step 1) Uninstall & reinstall all FPSE (just to be safe)
Step 2) Upload everything using the Publish in FrontPage (Using FrontPage or SharePoint Services)
Step 3) Check that everything works
Step 4) Repeat steps 2 & 3. This will make sure that you can publish files over current files, without them becomming corrupt..

- Tell him it is because he keeps telling you to FTP when you shouldn't. If he is tired of them not working, he should start by giving you advice that does not cause them to stop working.

Don't you just love it when the "experts" stamp on their own foot! :)

The FPSEs have to be working in order for Publish via sharepoint to work.

Bobby,
I have gotten access to the site now, but when publishing, I'm getting a "you are not allowed to publish files into a executable folder on this server", "/" is the folder maybe the root folder...

What should I do now? do I have to change the settings on the server???

Google led me to this page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308948

Once your hosts says everything is working, have them test it on their end to see if it is in fact working.

Thanks, I'm working on it now, but nothing is for sure. I suppose there never is a simple solution to these servers and publishing.

They are disgruntled bc of so many issues popping up bc of me.... so I suppose its mostly my error. Nonetheless, you live and learn.

- Everything that you have been suggested to do in this thread, is 100% fault of your host.

Your host doesn't understand how FPSE work, nor do they know how to properly configure them.

Any host who tells their client to publish your FP website using an FTP program instead of FP, does not know about FP and FPSE.

Bobby,
When the folder is marked executable, such as the root, I cannot publish via fp.

I did go into the main properties of the folder and made the necessary changes, but still no adue. It seems, I cannot change the permission, in order to update and upload the site.

What do you recommend?

this is the tag line: cannot publish to a folder marked "/" which is executable. Ive went through the faqs on micro.com, but not helping since the issue is with permissions being changed in fp 2003.

furthermore, since I am doing a south american trip, this is progressing the problem with lack of cpu access and such.

Thanks,
