i know that links from sites related to yours are best, but what if random sites link to me and i don't link back, will that hurt me? thanks so much in advance.

True. There is really no way to control who links to you. Just continue to build your site with solid, useful content to attract people to it. They'll want to link back to you and hopefully they'll have a nice site themselves with a good Page Rank.

Linking back to a site is totally optional on your part. Always make sure their site is of good quality if you plan to do so. Linking to crappy sites tarnishes your reputation in the eyes of your visitors.

The more backlinks, the merrier! :)

Although there is no way to control who links to your site, there is a way of knowing who is linking to you and especially if the one linking to you is what is considered a bad site in the eyes of the SE.
