HELP - Pages with FP Forms hang up for some users only - 12/17/2006 19:50:18
Hi everyone,

Some of my visitors are complaining that they cannot fill-in my online forms because the pages containing FrontPage forms are hanging up on them.

I can fill them in fine using my desktop but the forms are hanging up when on my laptop. Both computers are using the same version of IE (version 6 plus sp2) and both computers are using MS XP

Can anyone offer any suggestions or help to fix this problem please

Here is a link to one of the problem pages: Test Page

Feel free to enter some dummy data if you wish.

But if you experience the problem it will hang up before you can enter any data.

Hope someone can help

AussieT

EDIT:
Pages appear to fully load (text etc) but when you try to enter data in the fields the timer icon is seen and you are unable to enter any text in the fields and the page just hangs. You then have to close the browser and you get an error message "The Program is not responding" End Now?
END EDIT

Didn't hang for me... Are you saying the page never fully loads?

How many different computers have you tested this on? Out of those, how many saw the problem?

I have tested it on two computers and a friend has tested it on three computers, out of these it has failed on 3 out of five. I will test it on two other tomorrow.

Edit: Just tested on older computer running win 98 it worked fine.

These three computers what OS and browser (version) were they?

Coreybryant: All failed computers were running Win XP with Internet Explorer version 6.0.29..... with sp2 updates installed.

I have had others also contact me to say they were unable to use the forms, but I have not been able to find out what OS and browser combo they were running.

Jaybee: Thanks for testing out the page for me on the 3 browsers.

Works in Opera too.

Just a thought, try finding out what Firewalls and AV these machines have. There must be something common to all of them that's different to others.

Yes, I will try to find this out ans see if there is a common factor.

I guess I was hoping that this was a common bug that the forum had heard about and that there would be a quick-fix that I could implement.

I am in the middle of a campaign for new members for the site when I discovered that some were unable to join up. I wonder how many experienced the problem and just gave up.

It seem that none of the forum members have had any problems (so far). But then most are probably running latest OS and browsers.

I searched the Microsoft knowledgebase and came up blank so it's not common.

It could be it an issue with their ISP trying to connect to your host. It could be firewall/anti-virus related. It could be due to some sort of program that auto-fills forms.

There are a lot of things that might have caused it, but it seems like overall it is fine. I would ask the people to test it again and see if the problem still occurs.

One of the failed computers is my laptop, so I am testing it regularly and the problem still exists. I think this also rules out the ISP issue as it works fine on my desktop but not laptop.

Laptop OS = WINXP Pro
Desktop OS = WIN XP Home

Also I use other forms for sending email booking enquiries and these are working fine. No known isssues. it is only the 3 membership forms that are not working.

It did work for me as well on Windows XP Pro (SP2) and IE 7.0. I looked at your code - nothing that I could see of hand that would be causing it. You do have a lot of errors in the code. I did notice that you wanted a Post Code but that was not marked.

Have you tried possibly without all those required fields to see if that might be the problem?

First thing I usually look for is Norton. That has a habit of doing very odd things. I've had people phone me to say they can't see a single image on one of my sites and it's been down to their Norton settings.

Just updated IE 6 to IE 7 but Problem still exists

In case it helps unravel the problem - the Blue Title bar in IE& says (Not Responding)

Will try disabling Norton and report back EDIT: Disabling Norton did not Help

There is no doctype on that form page. Could that have anything to do with the problem?

Don: Thanks not sure about the doctype. I have just used the standard frontpage forms feature. Not sure what happens at the html level. Perhaps someone else can help

I have disabled all required fields - No improvement

Ugraded to IE7 - No improvement

While it is encouraging that no one here has been able to duplicate the problem, it is still frustrating to know that some of my prospective members are unable to sign up

The strange thing is that my other 'email forms' work well on the same computers that freeze up when using the 3 membership forms.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Run your page through here.

http://validator.w3.org/

Just a thought though, does anyone on here who gets the forms OK have Norton running? I don't

Ask those visitors of yours that are having the form problem if they have Norton. Turning off Norton may not be enough, you may have to remove it completly but that presents another problem as many people have problems removing all of the Norton files.

I'm told that there is now a tool to do it because they've had so many complaints. Now if only we can persuade AOL to do the same.....
