used hard drive as back up - 12/19/2006 20:14:33
I managed to fry my board on my fairly new gateway. I want to use that hard drive as a secondary on my old compaq. however, the new machine is xp and the one I want to put it into as the secondary drive is W98. Will this work? The main reason I want to put it on the old machine is so that I can recover all my documents, emails, images, etc. Thanks

That will work fine, you can mount the one containing win98 and then copy the files over.

Interesting... I was thinking you might not be able to do that because your XP drive might have been NTFS, but I see there are utilities out there just in case. http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/NtfsWindows98.html

As ou812 hinted at, if your Gateway drive was formatted in NTFS you will not be able to access it when using it as a slave in 98, you will need 3rd party software to allow read/write access to the drive, or it needs to be repartitioned and formatted to FAT32.

When you mount the drive, XP's disk management should pop up and recognize all formats of the drives. Why would it not be able to read and copy a win 98 drive?

Thanks to Davejb and oui for the NTFS hint. I have not yet installed the 'used' XP drive. And I hope, per the BobbyDouglas note, that the XP disk management does not pop up since I hope to boot up in the W98 and jsut be able to read and copy the data files from the xp drive to the W98 one. However, raises an interewting question. Could I make this W98 computer into a dual boot one? I think it has barely enough memory to run XP, and really only want to do this install simply to access the data files on the xp hard drive. This has been great, and any more help is appreciated. I will let you know how it works out. I know I can do the hook up of the drive, and i know how to fix the pins to make sure it does not boot. I will cross my fingers. Thanks again to all!
