When I take my old hard drive out of my old computer and mount it in an external box, do I have to remove the operating system from it before I can access it from my new computer? In other words, will the new computer be confused by the old operating system on the external hard drive?

No. Mount it as a "slave" instead of primary drive (cabling should be identified and in place). The old drive will be recognized in >>Start>>Explore as drive "X" on the new box and you'll then be able to access/copy/move the old drive's files. The new machine operating system, however, won't be able to recognize the old drive's programs since the new operating system Registry won't reflect necessary load entries.

My 2x experience = leaving the old operating system in place on the old/slave drive doesn't seem to impede or otherwise hurt anything. Not as daunting as it sounds [&:]

I bought an enclosure from Radio Shack for $39 and installed my old 40GB hard drive in it and it works great. I copied all my documents over to it and now I feel good about having backed up my files (finally). I had to set the jumper to "Master" to ge my computer to recognize it but it works just fine in that configuration.
