Laptop video issue - 12/26/2006 20:07:38
I inherited a 1998 vintage offbrand laptop; Celeron 400mhz; 64mb ram, w ME op system. The best I am able to do is use an svga video driver which will allow 800 x 600 resolution, which is fine, but with only 16 colors. I need at least 256 colors to get on the internet and view jpg files, which is all I want this computer to do. If I upgrade the ram to 256mb, will that solve my problem? How about if I upgrade the os to win 2000?

Most likely it is due to using a generic windows driver VS. the driver for the video chip. Under start>settings>control panel>system>hardware tab>device manager. Then click the + sign to the left of display adapters. This will tell yoou what video chip you have. Then google that plus driver. You SHOULD then have a sutable video driver to use. I can't say what resolution and color depth you will get out of something that old but it will be better than what you have. When running the correct video driver you can bypass the above. Just click on your desktop. Then go to properties. It will list what display chip/card you have. Take care, Brian

Thanks for the response Reflect, but no joy. The only driver showing up in device mgr is the generic svga that I have loaded. I agree that if I can figure out who made the video card, I could probably find the correct driver. The problem is that the computer is a CompUSA laptop with the video card embeded in the motherboard. The CompUSA people have been no help. It looks to me that I'm stuck with the generic video driver, which would be fine if I can get it to recognize 256 colors. The question still remains, will increasing the ram do the trick?

I have always been able to find out useful information about motherboards just by the BIOS codes displayed at power up from this site: http://www.wimsbios.com/index.jsp You should be able to track down the motherboard manufacturer and other goodies which should in turn lead you to the appropriate video drivers. Hope it helps.
