_gail -> Does your host provide a SPAM filter (12/27/2006 12:43:16)

I maintain my sister's business website and, like to most of us, she's getting sick and tired of all the SPAM. Her host does not provide any filtering saying that it slows down the server too much. The host says the individual should be responsibile for filtering spam. Is this the policy with most hosts?

thanks.

I run my own email host at the company I work for and we use a service from AppRiver

http://www.appriver.com/default.asp

that costs us 99 cents per user per month. It works excellent filtering SPAM and virii before it ever hits our Exchange host. If you have control over your MX records, this is a great product IMO. However, this isn't for 'individual' use.

Hope it helps.

So, what are you saying? This is something a provider of hosting services should implement? If the host doesn't do something soon, my sister wants me to look for another host.

IMO every mail server 'should' implement some kind of SPAM filter or at least an option. I am however, only a 'private' host so I cannot speak for others.

My home service has no SPAM filter from my ISP tho. Hmmm...[8|]

Have you considered gmail?

I'm using it and like it a lot. Very good SPAM filter and great at handling email.

But,as far as I know, I can't use gmail for mail associated with my domain, such as when I send out my monthly newsletter.

If my sister doesn't need her site but still wants a business email address, I may suggest an upgraded version of Yahoo mail for business. She can probably keep her business domain email address. It only costs $35/year and includes a spam filter. She will, of course, keep her domain name.

I use Cloudmark for my digicamhelp.com email addresses. It does a good job but somehow it's still a pain. I get about 300 spam messages a day. [:@]

What host are you talking about? Most will have at least a basic filter to get rid of the millions of spam that comes in every day, but some might not provide anything more than that.

The past week I haven't received a single piece of spam, usually I average less than 5 per day.

Roger, are you able to submit your own spam to their service so they can view it and block it so it doesn't make it in next time?

Yes, it does have a 'learning' address you just forward the SPAM to and it adds it to it's algo's and filters. I like it quite a lot and has never had any outages since I've been using it (about 15 months).

It will also cache mail if your server is down so people emailing don't get rejects / bounces.

Hosting companies should provide this - email programs / servers should provide this. You might check out TechEvolution for hosting

Thanks everyone for the excellent info. My sister may change her host if it doesn't start offering some SPAM protection.

Is there a pricing sheet anywhere? I can't seem to find pricing information at all.

If it is only $12/yr per user, I could easily see this as an awesome tool for handling mail when you are on very low budget host. Some people don't need their site up and running 24/7 with blazing fast tech support, but they still want the spam filter service of a good host.

That's what it is for us with 70 users. You have to submit a request for them to give you a price.

It's simple to setup and invisible to the user. It's an MX record change that points to their servers and then they send to yours. It's filtered before it ever hit's the box. In fact, their servers are the only SMTP traffic I allow to my box for enhanced protection. I like it a lot - it's quite 'hands-off' and just works. Not perfect (and IMO none of them are) but we get 60K+ messages sent to our domain weekly with a 98%+ filter sucess. And we have the filter tuned down slightly to eliminate false positives.

I personally get around 40-60 legit emails a day with maybe 2 SPAM on a *bad* day.

I get no commisions[:)]; just think it's a good product for pre-scanning emails at the domain level.
