CSS Positioning - Height (Full Version)

I'm using CSS in DreamWeaver MX2004 to position various Layers on the page. I go to the Design Panel, then click on CSS Styles to change positon, color, background, etc. Works pretty well.

However, I have one layer (with a repeating image) that I want to extend the height of the page (because content is in another layer and the height of that layer will vary). So, I go to Design Panels / CSS Styles and click on Positioning / Height / 100% (that yeilds the part of the CSS code height: 100%; This almost works in IE7 and FireFox 1.0.6, but totally fails in IE6.
Any ideas?

Hmmmm height is one of those intangibles that always gets people in a mess. Think about it logically. Height 100%. 100% of what? How high is a page? The more you put in it the higher it gets so 100% can mean anything.

Your best bet is to try and design the page so you don't use heights. It would also help if we can see what you've done.

Here are 2 examples:
When I added some extra text to one of the center columns, the outer columns no longer went to the bottom of the page - see http://briandina.com/css/test21.htm

Then I tried putting in a "wrapper layer" called .main (pardon the lime-green background), and put the .left, .center and .right layers INSIDE .main. That didn't work either - see http://briandina.com/css/test31.htm

I'm wondering if there's something wrong with my approach or my syntax.

No, nothing wrong with your approach, It's one of the things that happens with css layout columns. There are ways round it and there are plenty of approaches to it if you do a search round the web.
