kandykane -> Pulling My Hair Out! (12/29/2006 20:05:10)

I have been trying to get a simple form done for my site. When I hit the submit button, it goes to an error 404 page and I don't get the info via email.

I used the form wizard and the long route...nothing is working. I have gone through the tuts..still nothing works.

Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? I have been at this one thing all day long!

Thank you,
Linda

At a rough guess, I'd say the path to your results file is incorrect.

Try changing this bit of the webbot code:

u-file="fpweb:///_private/ClientInfo.txt"

to this:

u-file="_private/ClientInfo.txt"

You'll either need to edit the page in HTML view, or go to Form Properties and change it there. Plus, ensure that the file named ClientInfo.txt exists in your _private folder.

If that doesn't work, let us know and we'll look at it again.

Are the FP extensions enabled on your server?
Did you publish or ftp?

"The requested URL /--WEBBOT-SELF-- was not found on this server"

This error may indicate that you may have used FTP instead of publishing if FP extensions were enabled.

As a side note Linda, don't use FP forms. They are not secure.

kandykane -> RE: Pulling My Hair Out! (12/29/2006 21:19:28)

They are enabled on my server, I did ftp as the "publish web" will not highlight for me to click onto. Not sure why that is. I have searched for the answer, but nothing.

So, I should make my own form and not use the wizard?

Thank you,
Linda

Kitka -> RE: Pulling My Hair Out! (12/29/2006 21:32:46)

The FPSE may have been enabled once, but they are not working now.

I tested your site here:
http://www.dnswiz.com/fptype.htm

and it reports:
WWW Site: www.lindaandcompany.com
Port: 80
Server Software: Apache
FrontPage Extensions: NO

It is likely that FTPing your files has corrupted the FPSE. You (or your host if you don't have a control panel) will have to reinstall them. If you need FPSE you must publish using http not ftp.

But Don is correct - the FP form handler is insecure, it is better to use a third party script. One that is very secure and highly recommended is Mike Cherim's. A number of the regulars here use it, so help is at hand if you need it.

Mike's form will only work if you have PHP available on your host but if you have then it's the best one to go for.

WOW!!! What a wealth of information. You all ROCK! I have been posting on the Microsoft forum, with little help (them mainly speaking in tech terms) which I didn't understand. I am so happy to have found this forum. You all are my new best friends..LOL

I will go and reinstall on my server, then go to the other site to generate my form. It does have php as my other 2 sites are php sites.

Crossing my fingers, toes and legs!

Thank you,
Linda

First rule of thumb when dealing with badly behaved FP forms - reinstall the FPSEs first and see if that fixes it. If that doesn't work, come here. [:D]

Step 2 - ditch FP forms and get something more secure.

Step 3 - come back here when that doesn't work...[:D]

Welcome to OF btw! [:)]

FrontPage Extensions

Current Install Status Installed is
what my server reads, but DNS Wizard reads:

WWW Site: www.lindaandcompany.com
Port: 80
Server Software: Apache
FrontPage Extensions: NO

I give...any suggestions?

I have a grand opening on Tuesday in my area, so I need this site up and running correctly....who knew that 1 little form could cause so much trouble..LOL

Thanks..Linda

ps..thanks for the warm welcome!

caz -> RE: Pulling My Hair Out! (12/30/2006 9:37:01)

Extensions can be installed but either not configured correctly and/or not applied to your web. Either way your server tech people need to get off their backsides and do it for you. [;)]

womble -> RE: Pulling My Hair Out! (12/30/2006 9:37:11)

You've two options (which aren't mutually exclusive btw)...

1) raise a support ticket with your hosts and badger them repeatedly until they explain why the FPSEs aren't working/fix them

2) check out Mike Cherim's form as suggested above.

It's very easy to install, and a number of us here use it, so if you run into any problems there should be someone around that can help you out. The first time I installed it, it took around 10 minutes. You can pretty much copy 'n' paste the provided code providing you know the basics of HTML, and with a few tweaks of the configuration file you're set to go.

kandykane -> RE: Pulling My Hair Out! (12/30/2006 9:48:21)

Thanks...I downloaded Mike's and it is looking pretty greek like to me.

Did I mention this is my first site....and I am a natural blonde..LOL....so I am learning as I go. My main attributes is graphic design...so this is a new field for me. I wanted my site a certain way, so I figured it was easier for me just to do it myself..yeah...right!!

Forget the blonde part...I do have a degree! hehehe

If anyone can give me a start on the form I downloaded from Mike, that would be great...at this point, I would pay someone to get this form done for me!! Any takers?

I need more coffee!!!

Hugs,
Linda

I'm just off out so I've PMd Rachel to see if she can help you. If you're still stuck when I get back I'll take a look for you.

womble -> RE: Pulling My Hair Out! (12/30/2006 9:54:59)

Gimme five minutes (just off to put the kettle on [:D]) and I'll PM you.

caz -> RE: Pulling My Hair Out! (12/30/2006 9:58:31)

Being blonde with a degree, but no knowledge of PHP I found it a bit daunting too, but following Mike's clear instructions I got it to work. Rachel is the best person to help out though.

Blonde is not a problem, but graphic design?...[;)]

kandykane -> RE: Pulling My Hair Out! (12/30/2006 17:23:16)

Rachael got me up and running...what a doll!

I appreciate everyone's help and input. Like I said before you all ROCK!!

Hugs,
Linda

You call 10.44 am "early"? Yikes, did you have a party the night before or is late rising the norm for you?

treetopsranch -> RE: Pulling My Hair Out! (12/30/2006 21:54:14)

Linda, Let us know what steps you took to fix the problem. Maybe others are interested and may learn from your experience.

Went to a gig in London the night before and didn't get home till 3am. Then got woken up at 5.30 with a storm, then again at 8 when a client rang, so sleep had been a bit on the short side. I didn't even have the strength to pick up a banana let alone throw one.
