front page 2002 - 1/1/2007 10:11:42
I'm considering buying a used copy of Front Page 2002. I found one for sale but it says "(old version)". Is there a significance to that designation?

They're referring to the fact that FrontPage 2002 is one version behind the more current one, FrontPage 2003. Hence, their notation "old version". There were considerable improvements made between the two versions so you might consider getting the 2003 version instead if you want to stick with FrontPage.

I have a feeling that you might save some money by buying FP 03 instead.

He's someone selling FP 03 for $80 (view feedback)

Here is an FP 03 academic license for $50 (view feedback)

By all means, move up to FP 2003. More stable.

Thanks for the information and alternate sources of supply for the software. Does "OEM" mean that all I get is the CD and registration key and no official Microsoft packages and manual etc.?

Probably.

If you're paying $80 for it though you might as well splash out another $9.99 and get a copy of Expression Web which has replaced FrontPage. It's the upgrade price but if you have an old copy of FP you'll be OK. Check the upgrade rules.

See the ad in the column to the left.

- Yeah it does.

- Keep in mind many of the non-standard features that make FP a lot easier, have been completely removed. Before you decide to take the plunge into Expression, please make sure that you will be fine with the features that were removed (for example: automatic forms, counters, guest books/discussions, as well as the entire FrontPage Theme area). If these kind of things are not an issue, Expression would be a good upgrade.

Also keep in mind that those will be as much use as a chocolate teapot if your host decides to remove the now unsupported FPSEs.

- That's a good point. FPSE are no longer supported, meaning they are no longer being updated. That doesn't mean that most hosts are going to remove them though. Most hosts won't remove them until there is a security issue that is big enough to warrant the removal of the FPSE.

Bobby, I took your advice and ordered one of the FP2003 programs from Pricegrabber and it worked out great. I installed it and it is perfect. I was able to register it with Microsoft without any problem. I like the 2003 version better than my previous 2000, although there are some issues I have to get used to.
