Get lost. I'm already subcontracted for that one. [:D]

Google give a basic explanation here: http://www.google.com/technology/

No. That's Google's definition. They are a business that wants to change the meaning of a word.

It talks about links being "votes" on a site's worthiness. Hardly a measure of a site's relevance when we all know the "votes" are rigged due to the underhand SEO that goes on with link farms and such like.

directory sites

Now, directories, I hate those! They are deceiving and waste my time.

In the long run, were we discussing if SEO is OK? I think the main subject was actually Tony getting mad at some of us. Don't get mad Tony.

I agree with Rachel's comments, and on a similar vein if backlinks can be purchased then that makes a mockery of the whole argument. Surely you can't buy worthiness, in the sense they are using the word.

Womble - You don't understand. You are taking my quote out of context. I was speaking very clearly and very easy to understand about the word 'spam'. Especially as it is misused to define web sites. Google is trying to redefine a word to fit their business needs.

I don't understand why some of you are so bent about SEO. It is very obvious to me that you don't understand SEO. I guess I don't understand why you insist on coming to the SEO forum and attempt to bash posts, the SEO profession or individuals.

This is not the first time.

womble -> RE: No ranking for main page of my site (1/4/2007 12:44:47)

No, and it's not the first time you've antagonised people and attempted to patronise people, just because they don't happen to agree with your views - which quite frankly I don't think is appropriate behaviour for a moderator. Last time I checked, this was still a place where people are as much entitled to their views as anyone else.

Yes, we do understand SEO - and the current debate stems from the initial post and the response that maybe the page's PR was suffering because of attempts at underhand SEO tactics. As we've said very clearly and very easy to understand, the only people to benefit from the backlinking, link farms etc. etc., are SEO professionals, those running those places, and the SEs - not the average surfer who has to wade through pages and pages of rubbish to find what they're looking for.

Perhaps some of us understand how it operates and would like to see aspects of it changed. What's wrong with debating something like this? I'm just interested in trying to find out what justification there is for using backlinks to gauge relevancy. From your answers it's all about money so why doesn't google just sell search terms to the highest bidder, that would at least be honest.

Is that some sort of threat? Are we not allowed to debate anymore?

Mango Himself -> RE: No ranking for main page of my site (1/4/2007 13:53:52)

Guys, guys, guys! Calm down!

We're missing the whole point. It started out with a guy from Kiev who runs one of those shady businesses and now it is turning into a holy war!

C'mon guys! We all love to debate. It's what separates us from Klingons!

BTW Tony, "you're a funny guy!"

OK so maybe the OP added way too many links in too short a time and Google penalised that page.

Our recommendation is save your money and don't invest in a full blown paid link program, you may actually hurt your site with this type of strategy. Instead, build links over time on your site, be very picky who you link to and who links to you. Consider offering white papers and articles as link bait so that other sites will want to link to your content. Do have a link page, but don't go crazy filling it up with links that are really meaningless to your viewers. Select the links you add based on merit, content, site design, and their position in the SERPs. Don't sign up with link farms or automated link programs.

Excellent excerpt from an excellent dedicated individual! I couldn't agree more!

Mojo,

I think no matter what you say here, your point won't make it across. If people want to think SEO is dead, or that there is no need to hire a guru for SEO, just let them think that.

This thread has completely deviated from its' original topic. If anyone wants to go on about this issue, please make a new thread.
