Low voltage shutdown? - 1/5/2007 9:06:56
Approximately how low could voltage go on a household current before a machine decides to turn itself off (go dead).
A client of mine is having random turn-off issues and I cannot find any hardware or software reason of this. Their entire house is on two 20A breakers and I'm wondering if this is the issue.
The machine is blown out and is fairly new so dust/heat isn't the problem. PSU rails look good along with multi-meter readings.

could be a bad fan on the power supply, allowing the PS to overheat, and shut down
I think I'd try another power supply to try and rule that out....
...just something to check out...

I tend to agree that is is a heat issue. Following is a free heat monitoring program you can try...

Also I would recomend that they borrow a battery backup (APC/etc) and hook the computer into it. If the power drops too low enough for the workstation to reboot) you will hear a click. Thissound is the APC going from AC to battery backup.

I have a batch of about 20 machines that were doing this on occasion. Further investigation revealed it was the CPU fans that were failing and hence overheated the CPU. Seemed like the whole batch of machines were affected (and of course out-of-warranty). It was a relatively inexpensive fix that could perhaps be overlooked.
