Looking good reseller host. - 1/6/2007 20:13:19
I am thinking about starting a reseller account. I have multiple domains running on several different host. Most of the resellers offer Linux, but I prefer Windows as I have several sites running Access databases. Can anyone recommed a windows reseller host.

STAY AWAY FROM godaddy.

I strongly stress you stay away from places like godaddy, 1&1, ipowerweb, and all the other cheap hosts - their service is horrible.

What do you expect from a good reseller host? It sounds like you might be new to the area, if so, there are certain things you want to keep in mind. Hosts with forums will usually be able to provide better service/support over hosts without forums. This is because when hosting is built with a community interface for clients, the host seems to treat their clients better. This is great for people who are new to hosting, because the forum will provide a place to view/post a lot of first timer questions.

Are you wanting to grow hosting as a big service down the road? Or is this mainly just a way for you to keep better control over your client's hosting?

What kind of monthly budget do you have in mind? Something like $30/month? Or more around $10?

Mango - it is very well known in the industry that godaddy is a terrible hosting company. They are okay for domain registration - but nothing else.

I would like to keep the monthly payments around 29.95-39.95. Right now my main objective is to consolidate hosting companies and make a little extra profit. As I get new clients continue to add them and make a little more profit each time. Not looking to setup a reseller website, just for my clients.

good to hear. I have about 20 sites hosted in godaddy and haven't had any issues with them in over a year. Do you know what some of the concrete problems are? It'd be nice to anticipate them.

There really isn't a set list anywhere about the issues, but by reading customer comments, you can get an idea about what's wrong with them.

Let's say you have a hosting server that can hold 100 clients at $10/month. You change the price to $5/month and then double the clients so you still come out the same. This is the idea of what these cheap, low cost hosts do.

It comes down to quality of hardware and service. It is the very small things that end up being a problem. One example is having a dedicated server at GoDaddy, and having a set limit of 1000 messages that can be handled per day. You'll more often than not find that when you deal with support from these cheap hosts, their first idea for addressing an issue is a problem on your end.

You can get dedicated servers for around $100 at semi-decent places. If I was to go buy a ded server, I would spend the extra money to get better tech support, better service, redundancy, and ensure that backup hardware is on-site. The other day one of our main switches died, our server was up and running about 30 minutes later. A datacenter in Colorado just recently lost power due to all of the storms, a lot of servers were offline because they didn't have a good enough plan in place to deal with power outages. If our main power goes out, backup generators automatically kick in - there are on-site reserves of something like 15,000 gallons of fuel.

When things like this happen with these cheap hosts, don't expect too much from them. I've heard horror stories where hosts were down for 24 hours due to having to replace something like a switch. Instead of buying a 2nd switch, they saved money and decided they would buy once there is a problem.

What happens when your server gets blacklisted due to someone sending out e-mail spams? Your host has to e-mail the place that has it listed and ask them to remove it. Spammers are greatly attracted to free hosts, did you know GoDaddy sometimes offers free hosting accounts?

Man, that sounds scary. I am glad the sites I have hosted with them are just your basic family sites. I will proceed to move them elsewhere.

I can't even begin to imagine wjat it would be like if one of my customers with online shops were to go down for 24 hours. I would have to hire the entire staff of Boston Legal to defend myself!

Thans for the tip. Any suggestions on good reliable hosting? Ded hosting as well?

- These cheapo hosts seem to be just fine for that, but I wouldn't ever put a client's website on something like that. I used to host with IPowerWeb, I loved getting the first check in for each client I sent over (it was something like $65 for a $145 site). After awhile, they started to get pretty dumb support techs and I decided it was time to move on.

When I was with them, I didn't have a clue about hosting. I thought about starting a service at home through my computer, but heard a couple people mention the huge downside for that. After talking with numerous people about everything, they said to join a reseller host that was based off of a community. After about a year of doing that, I felt pretty strong. Everything that I have learned since I started (about 3 years ago), has been online and from hosting communities. I added hosting as a service, not as a place to put web design clients - however many people pick reseller hosting due to the ability that they can simply put their web design clients at a place where they know that they will have good service.

For an apache/linux server, BlueWho.com is a great reseller host. I've actually had lunch with the CEO of their parent company (InsiderHosting), very nice guy. BW is the kind of company that might make a mistake that costs a client some downtime or money, and instead of passing it off as nothing, they live up to what they did and don't mind losing a buck to keep you happy.

I just did a search and didn't see too much in terms of negative problems. It appears they tried to lure their customers in with "unmetered" bandwidth, and then shut down accounts for using too much of the bw that was unmetered. They have changed that since then though.

Their pricing is pretty low, not sure if I would go with them for a business site.

Here's a good suggestion for a windows host: http://www.fluidhosting.com/resell/hsphere/

They have an excellent Reseller Guide for managing your account. 24/7 support chat, forums, and is housed in a good datacenter.

i had bad experiences with godaddy, althought they domain name service is incredible! but they suck at webhosting.

you can try hostgator, they offer reseller accounts starting at ~ $25pm i think.

dont forget to do a research on discount coupon codes through google ...

the usual discount at hostgator is $9.94, eg with discount-code hostingtops

I have 2 sites with ehostpros.com and noticed they have a terrific reseller plan. They have removed their forum but I have never had any problems with them. I can't vouch for their reseller plan but it sure is cheap.
