can't upload changes to my page ? - 1/9/2007 21:04:14
hi everyone - I have a real dumbass problem that I can't figure out. Whenever I try to upload a revised version of my page to the server, the changes do not want to upload. I don't know why this is, but the version I have on Frontpage (that I would like to upload to the server) is totally different from what I see on the web, even after I have published it. I have tried experimenting with the publish options, and that doesn't seem to help. anyone ?

If you are using FrontPage, did you click "Publish" to upload?

RE: can't upload changes to my page ? - 1/9/2007 22:33:35
Hi Bobby - Yes, I hit "publish" to upload it. I should add here that I have had a website now for a while. I was able to make changes easily, quickly, and predictably. But one day I lost my computer (hard drive, I think). I got another computer, but since my original computer was gone, I had also lost my webpage (the original version that I had on Frontpage), and I now had to reload Frontpage onto my new computer. The first thing that screwed me up was that I installed a newer version of Frontpage onto computer #2 than I first used to install my page on the server. I have since been told that this would have caused or created a mismatch of whatever frontpage extensions I would have been using - not good. If someone can comment on this, I'd like to learn more about it - Anyway, I downloaded/copied my site back onto my computer, but when I did that, it was gone from the server ??? This happened a few times. I eventually corrected that, but now I'm experiencing the problem of not being able to make changes. They look like they're happening, but after a few minutes of loading, my page always looks the same. ????

If it still doesn't work, send us a link. It might be a simple uninstall and reinstall of the frontpage server extensions on your server (something you might be able to do inside of your hosting control panel, or by contacting your host)

Thanks for the info guys - So, how do you clear your cache ? By clearing history ? I did try the ctl + shift + refresh thing, but there was no change in what loaded. I'm really interested to see what the problem might be. I also just tried changing the frontpage extensions at my web host. They have a warning there saying you should create a backup copy because subwebs and frontpage borders could be affected. Anyway, my web host advises me to: Please backup your site to "localweb" in FrontPage. Then republish your site after you reset the FrontPage Exensions. Where does one find localweb ? Is this at the web host or would it be on my own computer in Frontpage ?

Thanks again for all the help guys - Ok, so clearing the cache didn't make any difference. I cleared the cache from IE only, so maybe I should try from Frontpage. Bobby suggested I send a link. If you want to have a look at my page its here : favoriteprojects.com Please don't laugh too much at the condition of my page. I haven't been able to make any changes for some time, and it somehow deteriorated from what it was before my computer died. The version I now have in Frontpage is a little bit different from what you will see. Anyway, If someone would be kind enough to outline how I can make a backup copy without losing my page entirely, which is what usually happens, that would be great. I would do this by going file, save as: local web/favprojects ?

Terry, you could try this to create another copy of your live site locally (below for FP2003). Open FrontPage In the top tool bar click on >File >New In the task pane that appear to the right click on >One Page Website In the wizard that appears, select 'One Page Website' and on the right select the location you want it (something like http://localhost/mysite or browse to the location you want). Click OK and that site will appear in FrontPage. Delete the 'Default.htm' file. On the bottom toolbar, click on 'Remote Web site'. At the top of the screen that appears click on 'Remote Web Site Properties'. Check FrontPage or SharePoint Services for the Remote Web server type In the field for remote website put in http://www.favoriteprojects.com Next put in the username and password that you use for the site. The live site should now appear and hopefully you will be able to publish your remote website to your local machine (remote to local)

Nothing stands out to me in terms of what is shown on your site. Can you post the html for the homepage that you tried to update?

RE: can't upload changes to my page ? - 1/11/2007 22:10:46
Hello Sally - Excellent info, but so far I haven't been able to make it work. When I select the location and hit ok, I get an error message: Could not find a web server at localhost on Port 80...... This of course could be some problem in the way I'm doing it. Hi Bobby - You want me to post the html from one of the pages that doesn't want to update/upload to the web ? Or did you want html from the index page ? here's one page that doesn't want to update, html copied from Frontpage - (this is the version that I would like to upload - the one on the web is a little different - <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-us"> <meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 5.0"> <meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document"> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252"> <title>A Really Neat Pair Of Stills You Can Make</title> </head> <body bgcolor="#FFCC99"> <p align="center"><font size="5" face="Comic Sans MS">A Really Neat Pair Of Stills (that can be made)</font></p> <p align="center"><font face="Comic Sans MS">In my travels, I have come across two still designs that I believe are really noteworthy. I will include links to both of these units here. </font></p> <p align="center"><font face="Comic Sans MS">The first is a design called the amazing still. What I like about this still is that the unit is made to work unattended. It is silent, it is odorless, it is in a sense automated and can be left alone to work. Some people say that it is slow. True, when compared to a conventional type of still it is slow, but if you are making almost 750 ml of product every day, to me that's not bad at all. All you have to do is visit it once daily and pour off 500 - 750 ml of spirits, or whatever you are distilling. Sounds pretty good to me. People that have the conventional stills claim that this is too slow, but the unit is made to operate unattended, while their non conventional designs are not. </font></p> <p align="center"><font face="Comic Sans MS">It is made of plastic, so it is easy to clean and very inexpensive. I have to commend the person who designed this unit for thinking a little differently than everyone else. This unit is truly remarkable. </font></p> <p align="center"><font face="Comic Sans MS">One thing about this design that should be pointed out is that the strength of the product declines each day. Every day as you pour off your 500-750 ml, the strength of the distillate will be a little less. The first day you might get 40% alcohol, by the fifth day, you will be down to about 20% alcohol. This is why a new batch of mash is usually added after 5 days or so.</font></p> <p align="center"><font face="Comic Sans MS">Here is a link to <a href="../Amazingstill.pdf">the amazing still</a></font></p> <hr> <p align="center"><font face="Comic Sans MS">The Mini Still</font></p> <p align="center"><font face="Comic Sans MS">Some people like the hard core traditional method of distilling. If this is you, and you want to see how one of these is constructed, here is a really simple, very basic design that can be made with one trip to the neighborhood Home Depot store. Actually, any home supplies store that sells plumbing equipment will sell the materials necessary to make this unit. </font></p> <p align="center"><font face="Comic Sans MS"> I've never made one, but I like everything about it. It is simple to make, it is relatively inexpensive, and it was designed to use everyday materials. The unit works well, can produce spirits about as good as any other column still, and can be used in one of two ways, depending on how much time you have. </font></p> <p align="center"><font face="Comic Sans MS">Here's what <a href="mini-still.bmp">the mini still</a> looks like. When the page opens, click on the arrow at the lower right corner to see the details. It is super compact, and easy to make. Definitely something you should look at if you're interested in this type of thing.</font></p> <hr> <p align="center"><font face="Comic Sans MS">Are stills legal ? </font></p> <p align="center"><font face="Comic Sans MS">In some countries, it is legal to distill spirits for use at home. This is not the case yet in Canada and the US. But, it is legal to own a still as long as you don't use it to distill spirits (Sears sells a small tabletop unit intended for distilling water, and I believe several other manufacturers are into this by now, also).</font></p> <p align="center"><font face="Comic Sans MS"> So, if you decide to make one of these, please only use it to distill water and you'll be ok. If you ever do decide to make spirits with yours, please don't be stupid and try to sell what you have made. This will get you into more trouble than its worth. It is one thing to distill a batch and enjoy what you have made with your friends (the authorities of course even frown on this), but it is illegal in everyone's eyes to be selling what you have made. </font></p> <p align="center"> </p> <p align="center"><font face="Comic Sans MS"><a href="../index.html">back</a> </font></p> </body> </html>

Hi Terry, this is a wild guess - open Internet Explorer, go to >Tools >Internet Options >Connections and click on LAN Settings (bottom right). See if 'Bypass proxy server for local addresses' is checked. If it is, go to the advanced settings and make sure they are set for localhost. If it's not checked, check it and try again.

Hi Sally - I tried what you have suggested and I can't get there. I get an error message whenever I try. Anyway, I'm beginning to think that maybe the problem exists in IE. Is that possible ? I have noticed that there are a few sites that I can't get onto anymore. Its like some setting or preference is off.

RE: can't upload changes to my page ? - 1/14/2007 10:58:10
I just noticed something else that might be preventing changes from uploading. When I hit publish, I notice that the "Publish Web" window is reading this - Publish from: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\my webs Shouldn't I be publishing from Frontpage ? That's where my current revised page is stored isn't it ? Could someone please try this and let me know where I should be publishing from ? I have just tried to change this line and couldn't, so I might need some info to do this. It looks to me like what is happening is that I keep publishing and republishing a saved version that I first copied from the server when I lost my computer/original version of Frontpage. Does that sound right ?

I don't know if its me or what, but I don't have the option of adding anything to the list. How about backing up my page so I can reload the frontpage extensions? To make a backup copy, I would just click on the web folder and copy it into a new folder with a different name ?

I just tried fixing the frontpage extensions. It tells me they are fixed, but still no change when I try to publish. I have copied a few of the suggestions you have made and pasted them into a trouble ticket with the host. Jaybee, you asked me to go to Tools | Internet Options | Security | Local Intranet | Sites | Advanced and add localhost to the list. I did that, but it looks a bit out of place, since the only other thing there is a full address of some sort - http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com So, I've done that, will it make a change happen ?

hi Jaybee - ok, today my host said they tried to publish to my site and that my ftp password was incorrect ??? I don't know how that happens but, I reset my password, and was still unable to publish. The tech people at my host then said they were able to publish using my user name and password to a test page. So, they are telling me now that I should uninstall frontpage and try reinstalling it. So, I'll try doing that and let you know if there's any change. Before I uninstall Frontpage, is there anything I need to do to make sure my existing info/page is ok ? I would hate to wipe out everything while uninstalling.

ok, so I reinstalled office, and it looks like everything is going to be ok. I just tried publishing to my page, and it works !!! Damn !!! I believe I screwed up a few things while trying to use the corrupted copy of office, (or whatever that was), but at least I can make changes/corrections again. Thanks so much to everyone that posted with things to try. I have a few new problems now, but I will tackle them in several new posts. Thanks again people

RE: can't upload changes to my page ? - 3/2/2007 21:55:45
Terry- I am having the exact problem with one of my 7 sites. Up until 2 weeks ago - all was well. When I tried to publish new info on this one site (www.davidgoldbergdc.com) no changes will go through. It shows the changes being uploaded, and asks if you'd like to view the changes once published yet when you go to the site- no new changes show up. I have cleared the cache. I have refreshed the FrontPage extentions. I previewed the site in a new browser (and the changes showed up there, but not in the WWW). I have spoken to my web hosting company. They have no idea what the problem is. (They hate Frontpage ). I'm at my wits end and can not figure this out. I was hoping to find the answer here. PS I do not use Norton Antivirus (I use Trend Micro P-cillan). So it has nothing to do with Norton. The only thing I could think that I did recently was update some things Microsoft Automatic Updater suggested, yet I was able to publish new changes for my other sites- just not this one. ??? The change I am trying to upload is this one sentence- right at the top of the home page (but not in a shared border): Voted "Best Chiropractor 2006 in Boca Raton" by Boca Times Magazine I'm not sure reinstalling MS Office makes sense for me as my Frontpage software is a separate software from my MSOffice. Would this make any difference to my situation? (I am having issues with my PC crashing lately -possibly due to my Outlook Program in MS Office. Is my version (Office 2000 Pro) becoming obselete with all the newer platforms out there in the WWW, like a VW engine in a Ferreri ??? My FP is also a 2000 version. Help- please...I need to update this web site ASAP If someone out there can figure this out & can help- I'd appreciate it. Thanks- Sunnie

Hey Sunnie - I spoke too soon. I thought my changes were upoading/publishing to the web, but when I checked, they were not. So, I'm still looking, too. I did successfully manage to uninstall all remnants of Norton. And, as you say, it appears not to have had any effect. Well, at least I'm not alone in this quest. I'm going to be looking around here intensely for the answer. tt

Hi Terry- Larry M has been corresponding with me at another topic: http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/m-357891/tm.htm#359584 And the enigma is, he sees the changes on his IE7, but not his laptop or firefox!!! As Larry puts it, "Strangely, my Dell laptop with IE6 does not display 'Voted "Best Chiropractor 2006 in Boca Raton" by Boca Times Magazine' nor does it show in the source code. Further, the 'Voted' statement does not display in FireFox either. A real puzzle. Hopefully the OF Forum coders (the really smart guys and gals) will step in with a profound observation or three to help you resolve this " This is indeed a puzzle. Hopefully someone can help us. BTW are you the guy with the http://www.favoriteprojects.com/ site? I have been glued to the stories linked from your site. Facinating. Thanks. Befuddled by the Taos Hum! Love this internet!!! It's like having a set of mega-hyper-encyclopedias at your disposal 24/7. Sunnie
