PHP and strange Firefox behaviour - 1/10/2007 7:08:08
Most of my sites are done in PHP. I've always been able to view them locally in browsers even with a .php file extension, though obviously without includes or any PHP programming showing up. I have a WAMP server installed on my computer, although I don't tend to use it that much because it means moving stuff into the WAMP root directory.

Up until a couple of days ago, I could see the pages in any of the browsers, but now, if I try to open a .php file in Firefox, I get the dialogue box popping up and asking me what I want to do with the file - open it or save it to disk. The default "open with" app it's coming up as ft000001.exe, but even if I change it to Firefox, the same box just comes up again asking me what I want to do with the file. They're still displaying just fine on all the other browsers. I could just rename them all back to .html, but that's a bit of a PITA because as I'm going along I tend to upload to the server into a 'test' directory while I'm working on them, which means renaming them back to .php when I upload them.

I suppose it's not a huge drama, but it's just irritating me because I'm used to just being able to check them out locally without all this messing around. Anyone come across anything similar or have any ideas as to what might be causing this or what I can do about it?

No but I was about to post that I seem to have all new icons on mine. I think an update has come in but I didn't see it happen.

Tried it with a .php and all I get is the code.

[edit] Tried it with another one and it shows up fine.

Most peculiar.

I've found that as well with .html files with php in them - as long as they're .html files they display fine (obviously without any includes showing), but as soon as I change them back to .php - same thing again. I've posted on the Mozillazine forums as well, so maybe someone there will come up with some answers.

It may be one of the FF settings in the about: bit but not a clue which.

Which version are you on? I know a new one appeared very recently. Mine says 2.0.0.1

Yep, I'm on 2.0.0.1. I had to do a fresh install a couple of weeks ago after I had problems with a suspected memory leak, and went back to 1.5.whatever, which didn't cure the problem, and the problem was eventually tracked down to my AV software. Reinstalling 2.0 I was still having problems, but I think my profile had got corrupted because when I deleted all traces of FF including my profile and everything and started from scratch it behaved fine. Once I was sure it was okay, then I let it upgrade to 2.0.0.1, but that must have been a couple of weeks ago now and it's only in the last couple of days it's started doing this.

As far as I know, nothing's changed on my system in the last couple of days - I've not added any new software, and as far as I can tell the only updates that have come in were a Java one this morning, along with the M$ one.

I'm baffled.

If it doesn't work in IE, the problem is most likely with WAMP. Have you tried IE yet?

Yep, it's fine in IE and everything else - just Firefox that has a problem with it.

Have you tried FF with a new profile?

- Did you manually delete the profile data? C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Mozilla
