levins -> website design question (1/17/2007 9:10:49)

I have been talking to an organization who wants to update their current site. They are interested in updating the site and making it more modern and flashy without changing it into a totally new site. They also want to change the pictures & text.

In order to make it more modern, I think you would start from scratch. How else can you update a site to make it more modern & flashy?

Oooooh yes, I think that one needs a complete redesign from the ground up. Problem is, did you get what their ideas of "modern" and "flashy" are? I bet they're diametrically opposite to yours. When people say things like that I get a sinking feeling.

OK so that doesn't leave much else does it. You could go with a CMS. There are some pretty good Joomla templates around and then they can update content to their heart's delight.

Assuming that the included link is to the site in question, I would have to agree with your assessment. Start from scratch. $.02 [;)]

I plan to talk to her some more regarding her website. I wanted other people's opinion before I talked to her because my first thought was to start from scratch in order to make it look nice. She probably wants to try to work with what they have because they are a nonprofit organization.

You need to talk to her as a professional and let her know what you KNOW is best for her website. I often deal with requests from clients without much web experience for websites in this style or with this image and mostly it is a bad idea to go through with it.

I think a complete remake is in order, and you should definitely use YOUR idea of 'modern' and 'flashy'

Take care,

I agree - start from scratch, much easier in the end!

Also - just in case they do have some bizarre ideas, have a few sites up your sleeve that you can show them from the same sector that you think look good (don't have to be ones you've done).

Im do hope Im not putting my size 12's in it since I see your posts are from January, but right now those colours alone are enough to keep visitors time to a minimum. Classic case of trying too hard. The old less is more rule applies. Even dropping the purple for white would be an improvement. Best of luck.

If they want the pictures and text changing then start from scratch! Modern and flashy is vague. Tell them to give you links to websites they think are modern and flashy and have a look similar to what they want for their website. It will save you a LOT of time throwing around ideas and draft designs.
