At last a replacement for Foxy Voice [:D]
An extension called "SpeakIt" uses the MS sapi voices that Foxyvoice used and there is also that lovable talking smiley in the status bar too.
It can be set by context menu to read the whole page or just highlighted text.
Now if only I could get the sound through the speakers instead of the headset...oops, you can get it from HERE

OK, I'll check it out later. I've been using Opera Voice and it'll be interesting to compare the two.

[edit] Immediate comparison, it ignores Aural styles completely. It phrases sentences better than OV but only carries MS Sam as standard whereas OV has male and female.

I agree, it phrases sentances better, but the little man in my machine appears to have been drinking, and he also seems unable to pronounce the word 'useful'...hmmmm [&:]

I have 2 voices in the sapi so can choose between Michael and Michelle. ( Michelle can pronounce useful [;)] )

I tried installing other voices a while back but couldn't get it to work so I'm stuck with Sam, and yes, he's definitely been on the bottle. Opera Voice is actually pretty good. It deals with a few things differently to Jaws and I had to do some tweaks but nothing major.

Yep, me too. I had the same problem with Foxyvoice - various voices installed but it wouldn't recognise them, even though they work in other apps.

I've just remembered though, what I have got installed on my laptop (purely for my 7 yr old nephew you understand) is Cyberbuddy, which does recognise all the voices. It'll also read web pages out as well as stuff pasted on the clipboard etc. I've just rediscovered it, and it's great fun giving it posts from male members of OF to read...it's current character is 'Buttercup' who's got a lovely green dress on and a sweet voice. [:D]

Ah, I am running Win2K on this drive and I believe that XP uses Sam instead of Michael/Michelle ( gender-bending ? [;)])

Thanks Caz,

It's great to see that little face in the corner of my screen again!

womble -> RE: Text to speech - Firefox (1/18/2007 4:33:13)

I just wish it wouldn't roll it's eyes so much. When I'm testing a site it and it's sitting there looking all yellow and smug, it makes me feel like it's thinking "Pah! I could do better than that!" [:D]
