How is dreamweaver with asp, php, asp.net? - 1/17/2007 21:24:29
Seems that most of the wysiwyg programs don't like either asp (Nvu) or php (FP and Expressions).
Anyone know how Dreamweaver is?

Hi Scotty,

We use Dreamweaver with both ASP and PHP with no real issues to report.

Cheers
Andy

Dreamweaver is fine with PHP. In Preview it shows you yellow placeholders where the php code sits in the page.

There are cheaper editors around that seem to handle it as well, I'm currently playing around with a few to find which I prefer, so if money is an issue then there are alternatives.

Strangely FP is better with PHP than Expression Web. At least it leaves the code alone whereas EW tries to "fix" it for you. :)

I also use DW for both without any issues.

Jaybee; I have a FP2000. Do you happen to know how it is with asp/php? I'm just starting a asp/php class so I don't even know how to check...yet. (What I'm looking for is something to get me through the course without the additional learning curve of a new wysiwyg).

Whoa! No don't even think of WYSIWYG with PHP. Not going to happen, not even in Dreamweaver.

When you open a php page in FP all you see is code, there are no previews. Unless you have your machine set up as an Apache server, you can't test on there either, you have to upload to a host to check it out.

The difference between FP and EW is FP allows you to open and play with the code and it leaves it alone. EW tries to give you improvements and adds bits and pieces that you don't notice until you've uploaded and go to test and it's all over the place.

If you're going to be doing PHP at College they'll probably suggest a good editor to work with. Coffee Cup seems to be OK for all documents but for a specialised PHP tool there are loads. I've worked with Rapid PHP which was good. DZSoft is supposed to be OK too.

If you can show a college ID you can get whatever you want fairly cheap. Look for educational versions, they have the same functionality but cost usally about 1/3rd of the normal price.

I've used Dreamweaver for some pretty big database sites using asp with no problems at all. The code view makes it fairly seamless and there are no functionality issues that I am aware of.

RE: Academic version of Dreamweaver - 1/18/2007 13:37:02
There is an interesting article regarding the (open?) use of academic software at this web site.

Dreamweaver 8 (academic version) for $195 shipped
seller's reviews/feedback

The above program is complete, the only difference from that one and the normal $399 one is that the $399 price says that you are allowed to make money by using the software. The $195 price says you are not allowed to make money by using it, hence, academic version.

Looks like eDirectSoftware had their hand caught in the cookie jar > http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/partners/states/Montana.htm

We'll see soon if MS wins it or not, in the meantime, eDirectSoftware removed their MS products :)
