Textpattern is very good. The only problem is that if you want to use them as a CMS for a client as far as I know you don't have a WYSIWYG interface as you do with WP. But then again they may have come up with a plugin by now.

I don't see any alternative to wordpress. Its more user friendly and free. It has many advantages over blogspot.com

I have used snews in the past and like it. I do however like ExpressionEngine even more. They have a pay version and a free version, both work great. I like ExpressionEngine a lot more than Wordpress.

I can't get through to EE at the moment to check.
The thing I like about WP (and I use it a lot) is that it produces valid, accessible markup out of the box. It's easy enough to convert a site into a WP CMS site and there are loads of plugins to add functionality.
Things I don't like are the inability to do some simple stuff for instance adding internal links on a page can go horribly wrong sometimes using the rich text editor (which my clients would be). They also seem to have done away with the basic formatting option (e.g heading formatting) in the RTE. Adding advanced options via TinyMCE is not as simple as it is in a normal site.
