Need FP 2002 Server Extensions Expert - 1/22/2007 16:34:26
Hi Everyone, I have two large web sites, each is in the range of 700-800 pages, all done in Frontpage. Web sites: http://www.powderandbulk.com/ and http://www.waterandwastewater.com/ I have been using FP since 1997, (the sites were started in 1998), and I am currently using FP2003 and have FP 2002 extensions installed on a decicated custom server. The server has Red Hat Linux with Apache, PHP, Perl, mySQL, etc., all setup on a Dell server with Raid 1 hardrives. I need some expert advise (free or paid) from someone who knows the ins and outs of Frontpage Extensions 2002. Especially, some who knows how to troubleshoot them. My server guy is very capable, but he has reinstalled the extensions several times and we are still having some issues. Problem Since late December 06, the extensions do not work completely. When I publish from my PC to either site, FP will go through the publish cycle, but at the end of the cycle, the FP site will not relay back that it has finished publishing on the server back to my PC. Error message I get the "can't find your site, www.mysite.com on port 80" type message. Even though the changed pages have been published to the site on the server. Recalculate Hyperlinks Also, as a test, I have run a "recalculate hyperlinks" on the site on the server and it does not complete. Help Anyone who can help me with this issue(s), please post up and let me know what you think. If your services are for hire, to assist my server guy, let me know how to get in touch with you. Very Truly Yours, Joseph Taylor jbtaylor1@bellsouth.net Web sites: http://www.powderandbulk.com/ and http://www.waterandwastewater.com/

RE: New FP 2002 Server Extensions Expert - 1/22/2007 18:40:25
Frontpage Server Extensions on *NIX have pretty much been discontinued. I know I will miss them and hopefully MS will do something but until then you might try to find alternatives. Are you using any Frontpage Componentss? If not, consider using FTP to do your uploading. When you say uninstall - do you mean removed them from the computer and then re-installed the program or just removed the extensions from the web?

Hi Corey, Thanks for the reply. Over the years, I have slowly stopped using FP components, the only thing I use now it the "include page" function. Frontpage forms, counters, forum, etc. have all been replaced for some years now. My server guy has "reinstalled" the FP extensions, my understanding is that he has to do that, site-by-site. I have also been wondering if there is something about my setup with my PC that is causing it to time out...before the server tells it, that it has finished. Joe Taylor

Disable any firewalls and see if that helps. If you run any type of Internet Security then you will want to disable that too so you can try again. quote:
Frontpage Server Extensions on *NIX have pretty much been discontinued - The "support" for the FPSE is no longer available, however, FPSE still exists, and hosts still use it.

Hi Bobby, Great idea, just tried it and the publish function still hangs. I tested it by turning off my Norton Personal Firewall and some of the other features in 2007 version, anti phishing, etc. Good try, but turning off the firewall doesn't seem to do it. Very Truly Yours, Joseph Taylor

Does he have Frontpage to test it? If you / he is going through the web interface to recalcute the web and it is timing out, something it incorrect / wrong on the server. Has he tweaked the OS lately? Removing the extensions from the web can sometimes cause problems in itself. The Frontpage Includes is fortunately maintained locally by Frontpage so you should be pretty safe in using FTP. You might want to run Tools - Recalculate Hyperlinks locally (this won't help on the server, but will help when using includes).

We had an issue something like that a few years ago. The problem turned out to be local, not on the server. I can't remember the details of how we solved it unfortunately. But I'd suggest rebooting your modem/router. Not just a quick reboot, but unplug it for 10 mins at least to ensure you get a new IP when you reconnect.

Thanks for the replys: CAZ He did reinstall and reapply the extensions. You have to reapply them site by site. For example, one site the extensions for sometime it publishes, sometimes not. On the other site they dont work, IE the publish never completes back to my PC, even though files are updated on the server. COREY We both tried recalculating hyperlinks via the FP admin control panel on the server, but didnt take. I know what you mean, if I could get the servers copy of the site to recalculate, that has in the past fixed things. My server guy is in TX and I'm in FLA, so when we do this stuff we are on the phone, as he doesnt have a copy of FP. The only "tweaking" that has been done was to update mySQL from version 3.2 to 4.X. Otherwise, we have been trying to sort this out before he upgrades Apache and Redhat and the email software - all which work fine. I saw that on the includes, if I have to change, that would be the plan to move to an FTP situation, with someones software. Update the site on my PC and then do the FTP of the changed files to the server. Just got Dreamweaver 8 with a sofisticated FTP system. KITKA Thanks for the advise, will give it a try. Changed ISP's in early December to Bellsouth with a fixed IP address. Higher speed than my previous ISP. So I dont have the problem of the IP changing and moving around. Publish feature worked fine after the changeover to Bellsouth. It was one of the first things I checked. But, I agree with you, it could be something really simple on my PC that needs tweaking or updating. All I know is that it worked fine before 12/28... now one of my sites is spotty, working some of the time and not other times. The other site it doesnt work to completion of the FP publish cycle, ever. Very Truly Yours, Joseph Taylor
