Wireless Networking - 1/23/2007 15:22:51
I recently moved my wireless router from downstairs to upstairs in my house. Now, a cpu downstairs can't connect to the wireless connection, can't even find it. I am positive this is because the area of the hosue it is in and the connection just not making it to the room.

Now, I think I read somewhere about wireless connection boosters...think they're called access points? Anyways, anyone have any information on what they do / how they work / how to install them? Also, can I get one at Best Buy?

Does moving them back closer confirm its still a range issue?

I haven't tried with my laptop, but I am 99% sure that would cause it to work again..my house is laid out sort of wierd, and when it was downstairs, it was only a room away...and my connection upstairs was very minimal if at all. Now, it is great upstairs, but nothing downstairs.

I talked to a tech guy at a local cpu store here and he suggested to buy a powerful wireless router as what I am currently using is just what was given to me through qwest, an actiontec router / gateway combo thing...thoughts?

Far from an expert here, but I was going through a similar thing.

I've read good and bad results with the boosters. I think it depends (again) on where your router is and where your booster is. The booster needs to get a clean signal to be able to send (boost) it along.

I ended up getting an omni-directional antennae with an extension cable, so I could move the antennae to a more appropriate place. This seemed to help quite a bit. Still some bad spots downstairs, but it seemed to help a notch or two. If I would extend the antennae even further I'm sure it would do just fine (or like a booster!).

Since my router is upstairs on one side of the house, I would have preferred getting a directional antennae but I didn't have any luck finding one.

I got one of those as well. Worked great for me and *far* less expensive than an Access Point.

EDIT: This is the actual one I bought:

and for all intents and purposes, it essentially doubled my range. Pretty good bang-for-the-buck IMO.

How do I install it? Just plug it in and point it to where I want to go?

For me, it was just a matter unscrewing one of the current antennas and screwing this one in. Can't really "point" them though. The "omni" direction means it spreads the signal all around. So, being at one end of the house it helps the signal in the street as well as in my house. :)

And Roger, that's the one I got too.

I just ordered it online, so I don't have it yet...should have it today or tomorrow.

So, all I have to do is take it out of the package, screw in the antenna, plug it in and viola? That's pretty darn easy if that's all I have to do.

I went to install it today at lunch. I am assuming I plug it into the wireless adapter on my PC where the little antenna is, correct?

If so, well, the wireless adapter antena broke off when I went to put the new one on, so guess I'll have to buy a new one of those also...doh!

Um, it's really meant for your router. You unscrew the antennae on your router and screw this one in. Therefore, it provides better coverage for all of your wireless devices trying to reach the router.

Ahh! That makes more sense :)

I'll try that when i get home and hopefully I can rig the wireless connector back into my roomates cpu.

It turns out my wireless modem doesn't have a screw off antenna, so that sucks. I told the roomate to buy a new wireless card for his cpu. Can I put the antenna I just bought onto the antenna of the cpu card? Will that work? I don't want this to go to waste.

DZ, man you've got to move that cpu from downstairs near the router (or move the router near) and make sure it still connects before doing anything else. Like Spooky said, you've got to confirm that the problem is distance.

Won't do you much good to do anything else until you know (confirm) what the problem is.

Keep us informed, I love wireless stuff... BTW, what brand router do you have, I didn't realize some came without removable antennas.

As far as your question, the data states:

The D-Link ANT24-0700 Omni-Directional 7dBi Indoor Antenna connects to a variety of wireless routers and access points on the market today.

So the answer appears to be no.

Nick

Worst case scenario, I've seen those D-link routers for $20-30 (refurbs) that do have the screw-on antenna. I have one and like it a lot for the money.

That's the exact setup I use at home; that antena and a D-Link 54 mbps router. Paid about $50 together with shipping after about 15 minutes at Google. I have had no problems whatsoever. I get Good signals 75 feet away and Excelent anywhere inside (2 story house).

But, yes, absolutely confirm that's the issue.

Well, I have to first get a wireless card as the antenna won't even stay into the pc card...it just falls out. So that has to be fixed regardless. Once that is bought and replaced, maybe this weekend, then I'll check the connection.
