MTRaptor -> New to web development: Move from FP to Dreamweaver (1/25/2007 12:56:11)

Greetings all,

I am a new webmaster taking over a site that has been developed in FrontPage. I want to migrate to using Dreamweaver, but I'm having a problem. I do know that the web server this site is on uses FrontPage Server Extensions, and that the webmaster will not allow FTP. Can anyone help me figure out how to access the site, copy it to my computer and begin using Dreamweaver with FPSE?

Thanks,
MTRaptor

Welcome to Outfront.

Won't allow FTP???! Well unfortunately, FPSEs are FrontPage Server Extensions and they are there to allow you to Publish sites from Frontpage. They won't do a thing for Dreamweaver.

You have two choices. 1. Work on it in FrontPage. 2. Work on it in FrontPage.

When you say webmaster do you mean that or the Host? If it's the host, go find another one fast.

You can grab the site easily enough to get it on your machine and then use DW but you can't get it back up there unless you are provided with something other than FPSE.

You also need to take into account that some of the things on the site may use the FP bots to work and they need FPSE and won't be editable in DW. You'll have to replace them with something else. If you have a link to the site we can probably tell you what if anything needs to come out.

You're right, host would be a more appropriate word. The problem is that I have no control over our host, it is our school's website. It is our ROTC website that I am dealing with. If I could change to using FTP, trust me I would... I hate FrontPage. I'm feeling sick at my stomach now thinking that I have no choice but to use it. There are no extensions or anything that will allow me to use Dreamweaver, I suppose?

Not that I'm aware of. Problem is you're dealing with Microsoft. Your biggest problem is you're also dealing with a school server. I don't envy you.

Here's the link...

Please don't make fun, I know it is pretty funny how bad this site is. Not my fault, I swear. You'll notice that it is a small part of the bigger site, www.tnstate.edu

I was expecting something really bad but it's OKish as sites go. The good news is that it doesn't use any FP specials apart from the timestamp.

It's built using CSS and you can pull the .css file into DW with no problem. Most of the rest is javascript. Again no problem in DW. It's getting the site on the host that's going to cause you trouble..

Ask if they would consider a secure FTP. It's not as if you're going to be uploading games and stuff.

Ok, so I am trying to figure out how I can get by for now. I don't have FrontPage... which is going to be a problem. I have just put in a request to my commander to get it, but these things take time. For now, is there a way to at least get a copy of the site to my local machine without using FrontPage (I'm assuming the answer is no, but doesn't hurt to ask).

jaybee -> RE: New to web development: Move from FP to Dreamweaver (1/25/2007 13:36:59)

Yes there is but I'll PM you as we don't want all and sundry grabbing sites left right and centre.

Check my post above as I think I edited it after you posted.

Check this out:

This means worse news for me, as I was looking into using PHP. Ugh... I wish I hadn't taken this job.

Ahhh well, at least you've got SSIs. [sm=rotfl.gif]

The guys on here can help you with ASP, there are quite a few experts around. Me, sorry, PHP only.

I've PMd you the details.

You could try the "MS FrontPage is now dead and has been replaced with Expression Web which doesn't use FPSEs and shouldn't we be futureproofing and going down that route" trick

6. Is there a way that I can be made an exception to use FTP to access my folder?
A. We do not allow FTP access period. FTP and FrontPage Extensions don't work together very well. To allow FTP access we would leave a hole in our server security, therefore it is not allowed.

- wow... They drop FTP as opposed to the FPSE?

Good luck working with them [8D]

Gotta love that one, huh? I'm accepting the fact that I'm working with people who don't know what they are doing and don't want to put the time into improving it. Hopefully some power at be will force them to change, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Funny story: I didn't actually come to the site from that link, I was on this site before that... but it is funny that they think you guys are the ones to ask but won't take your advice.

Yeah hilarious. Tell them the guys and gals at Outfront said, Gee thanks a bunch.
