New to web development: Move from FP to Dreamweaver - 1/25/2007 12:56:11
Greetings all, I am a new webmaster taking over a site that has been developed in FrontPage. I want to migrate to using Dreamweaver, but I'm having a problem. I do know that the web server this site is on uses FrontPage Server Extensions, and that the webmaster will not allow FTP. Can anyone help me figure out how to access the site, copy it to my computer and begin using Dreamweaver with FPSE? Thanks, MTRaptor

You're right, host would be a more appropriate word. The problem is that I have no control over our host, it is our school's website. It is our ROTC website that I am dealing with. If I could change to using FTP, trust me I would... I hate FrontPage. I'm feeling sick at my stomach now thinking that I have no choice but to use it. There are no extensions or anything that will allow me to use Dreamweaver, I suppose? MTRaptor

Here's the link... www.tnstate.edu/rotc Please don't make fun, I know it is pretty funny how bad this site is. Not my fault, I swear. You'll notice that it is a small part of the bigger site, www.tnstate.edu

Ok, so I am trying to figure out how I can get by for now. I don't have FrontPage... which is going to be a problem. I have just put in a request to my commander to get it, but these things take time. For now, is there a way to at least get a copy of the site to my local machine without using FrontPage (I'm assuming the answer is no, but doesn't hurt to ask).

Check this out: http://faculty.tnstate.edu/server_capabilities.asp This means worse news for me, as I was looking into using PHP. Ugh... I wish I hadn't taken this job.

Gotta love that one, huh? I'm accepting the fact that I'm working with people who don't know what they are doing and don't want to put the time into improving it. Hopefully some power at be will force them to change, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Funny story: I didn't actually come to the site from that link, I was on this site before that... but it is funny that they think you guys are the ones to ask but won't take your advice.
