_private folder doesn't show up in save as list - 1/25/2007 16:06:30
I'm creating a new site and I've encountered a minor but annoying little glitch that I can't figure out.

I have a _private folder, that appears in the folder list view.

But that folder does NOT appear on the list of folders on my "save as" function. That is, when I try to SAVE a page to the _private folder, it doesn't appear on my list of folders. I have to SAVE the page to the root, then move it to the _private folder.

This does not happen on any of my other pages and I can't figure out what I'm doing differently or what setting I need to change (I tried the "show hidden folders" but that the _private folder is NOT a hidden folder, so that has no effect).

Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks so much!

Barbara

When FrontPage creates a new web, it creates one folder called _private. Anything stored in this folder is truly hidden - i.e., web visitors cannot view these files unless there is a link built to the files from an accessible page. If a visitor tries to access a folder or file stored within the _private folder, they receive an "Access Forbidden" message.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Swirl,

Thanks for the info, but I guess I wasn't clear as to the problem I'm having.
I am the creator/administrator of this site and I'm working on a local version (on my computer, not yet published).

I can see and even go into the _private folder in the FOLDER VIEW. But when I go to save a page I create ("save as") the folder does not appear on the list of folders -- so I can't "save" a new page into that folder.

Hi Barbara,

I've never seen this happen before. If the _private folder is in your folder list in your open web, it should be there when you use save as.

Try creating another new web and see if the same thing happens.

Is there a reason you are saving pages to the _private folder?

Swirl,

I did as you suggested and created another web -- and everything there works fine! I just can't figure this one out, but I don't feel too badly since even YOU were stumped (and when's the last time THAT happened???)

As for why I'm saving to the _prviate folder, well .... sometimes I make mockup pages that I use as templates, or just pages that need to be "held" for future possible use. I find placing them in that folder is easiest and most secure. That way no browser could accidentally stumble upon them.

Thanks so much for your help.

Barbara

You might be surprised how often it happens. :)

Glad to hear the the problem didn't continue when you created the new web. Unless it continues to happen, it probably isn't worth pursuing why or how. Sometimes simply starting over is the easiest and best option.
