My Periodic " What Say You " Post - Please Ct... - 1/25/2007 22:25:35
http://www.StartRemodeling.com

Can I have you cross check in Firefox ( different versions ) etc.

Just worked my tail off to eliminate some pretty solid errors, tried to "un Busy" the site a bit.

Suggestions? And please feel free to critique my new "mascot" My attempt at giving the site a little personality.

Thanks in Advance Y'All

Looks OK on the Mac. The mascot makes all the difference. It draws your eye and it breaks up the page.

I chuckled when I looked at the site - we have seen it many times and you always get beat up a little for 'cluttered' - the reason I chuckled thou is that, to me, the mascot really works - somehow he emphasizes the sections and makes it more organized when you look at it - I think it works great - good job

you have some missing alt text on some of your text-as-images e.g. 'black mold solutions' in the header

Those are hot spots on an image.

How do I add the alt text to it?

Or can I?

Or just add one alt text to the image itself?

I just added the alt text to the entire image.

Seems to have done the job - methinks

Unless of course there is a better way!

I like a man who does as he's told. :)

There is an alt text on the image but you also need one on each of the hotspots. The code for the hotspots is
<map name="FPMap0_I1">
				<area target="_top" href="mold_solutions.htm" shape="rect" coords="15, 0, 109, 36">
				<area target="_top" href="we_buy_homes.htm" shape="rect" coords="123, 0, 245, 36">
				<area target="_top" href="free_contractor_search.htm" shape="rect" coords="257, 0, 361, 36">
				<area target="_top" href="refinance/index.htm" shape="rect" coords="374, 0, 498, 36">

				<area target="_top" href="solutions/store/index.html" shape="rect" coords="510, 0, 610, 36">
				</map>

The alt text goes on each area
<map name="FPMap0_I1">
				<area target="_top" href="mold_solutions.htm" alt="Black Mold Solutions" shape="rect" coords="15, 0, 109, 36">

I'd change the alt for the image to read alt="Image map with hot spots" then have the individual details on each area.

Jaybee,

I had to double check my post in early December, but it was YOU that pointed out the fact that my site looked horrible in FireFox.

Which it did. Hammered dog doo actually. :)

Wanted to Thank You Very Much.

Cost me a lot of time, but it led to a better looking site in my opinion and on a "not so expected turn of events " .......

My AdSense revenue jumped up a couple % the day after I uplodded the changes.

Must be more than 4 or 5 folks using FF!

Have a Great Day!

I've seen your profile and pic.

I Like it that you like it.:)

Back to the point.

That was pretty easy.

The alt text doesn't show in my version of FF.

Is it a MS thang?

And while I have your ears, any suggestions that work well browser wide ( or close ) that I can find or buy to add a rollover script to my left hand border to organize it more.

ie - rollover Home Repair Index >> get a sub menu pop up with links in that section.

One more itty bitty FF ?

How in the world do I get rid of the text underline in the nav and on the other places.

IT SEEMS THAT IT JUST PICKS AND CHOOSES A FEW AND WON'T LET GO.

Thank you very much again.

Thank you for pointing that out.

It was an iissue with me when I changed that nav bar from links to the image and Jaybee helped me solve it.

Hi there Remodelingguy.

Where's your hammer? See I remembered it.:)

I like your new mascot though.

To me your site appears to be much more uncluttered now.

I like the revised layout, although as a personal preference I would prefer the page to be centred.

Hope the hits are rolling in.

Alt text shouldn't show. It's meant to be a replacement for the image. MS used it to pop a tooltip which is incorrect, it should only do that with Title.

There are loads of "rollover" scripts for menus. Depends which way you want to go, javascript or CSS. Do a Google search for "Fly out menus"

As for the underlines lets take a look at the code for your first two menu items, Home Repair and Black Mold

<tr>
				<td bgcolor="#FFFFFF" style="border-bottom: 1px solid #666666; padding-top: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px" align="left">
				<b><font face="Verdana" style="font-size: 8.5pt">

				<span class="navl">
				<img border="0" src="http://www.startremodeling.com/orangearrowsmall.gif" width="11" height="11"></span></font><span class="navl"><font face="Verdana" style="font-size: 8.5pt">
				<u>
				<a target="_top" href="http://www.startremodeling.com/home_improvement_main.htm" style="text-decoration: none">
				HOME REPAIR INDEX</a></u></font></span></b></td>
			</tr>
			<tr>
				<td bgcolor="#EEEEEE" style="border-bottom: 1px solid #666666; padding-top: 3px; padding-bottom: 3px" align="left">

				<b><font face="Verdana" style="font-size: 8.5pt">
				<span class="navl">
				<img border="0" src="http://www.startremodeling.com/orangearrowsmall.gif" width="11" height="11"></span></font><span class="navl"><font face="Verdana" style="font-size: 8.5pt">
				</font>
				<a target="_top" href="http://www.startremodeling.com/toxic_black_mold_main.htm" style="text-decoration: none">
				<font face="Verdana" style="font-size: 8.5pt">BLACK MOLD INDEX</font></a></span></b></td>
			</tr>

If you look at the difference between the two you'll see that on the first one you have a hard underline applied to it.

<u>
<a target="_top" href="http://www.startremodeling.com/home_improvement_main.htm" style="text-decoration: none">
HOME REPAIR INDEX</a></u></font></span></b></td>

If you go into code view and remove the start and end U tags it'll get rid of the underlines. Or you can highlight it in design view and hit the underline button which should remove it.

I'd like to center it too, but with shared borders on 2800 pages, it's a little more work than I can do right now with 1000 other issues to address.

AHHHH! The swinging hammer.

That was a while back.

Now I have my mascot.

My grand-daughter named him " HOMEY "

Thanks tho!

Can't believe I have a thread that no one has beaten me up for anything.

That must be a good thing.

Have a great week!

I did try that, but for some reason it didn't work.

But taking the <u> & </u> out definately did.

Thank you again.

You going to start charging me soon? :)

Thank you!

( I REALLY like that Pic - Beautiful Lady )

Isn't it cool that America, in it's short 200+ year reign has decided to change the English Language to suit them?

We don't have cheques. lol

Or Al - U - Min - E - Um.

Or .......

I used to live in Leatherhead and Guildford Surrey!

South of London.

And Stratford on the Thames for a while.

When I came to Texas in 1976, I had a British accent.

Now I sound like Texacan with a Twist.

Whatever that means. :)

My Father was transferred therE to open a London Branch of an oilfield supply company and we lived high on the hog.

Our homes were named "Green Acres " & " Tunstall.

Apple orchards, tennis courts, wine cellars and some beautiful Horses. We lived next to JP Getty in Leatherhead.
