Problems publishing "changed pages" - 1/26/2007 8:00:01
I have been updating my web site and publishing 'changed pages' successfully for about the past five years, until last week. I have been selecting 'use source file time stamp to determine the changes since last published.', and publishing has normally taken just a few seconds. Last week I started getting errors that prevented me from publishing. I got "system exception: access violation". I've now solved that (I'm not sure just how!) But now whenever I try to publish 'changed pages' as above, the computer begins to works its way through 'all pages'. The site is just over 1Gb, so even with my broadband, the publishing will take about 16 hours. I'm happy to wait for the 16 hours (this time, at least) BUT wheneve I try to publish now, it stops after about two or three hours with the message: "Could not find a web server at 'edinphoto.org.uk' on port 80. Please check to make sure that the webserver name is valid and your proxy settings are correct. If you are sure that everything is correct the web server may be temporarily out of service." MY QUESTIONS: 1) Why is FrontPage attempting to publish all pages, not just changed pages? (See also NOTE below.) 2) Why are my attempts to publish ending with the error message each time after a two or three hours? I have had dicussions with the web host company (FastHosts) and my ISP (Pipex) but neither of them has been able to explain this. I've been spending about 3 or 4 hours a day for the past week trying to solve this problem. I'd welcome any suggestions. Thank you. - Peter NOTE: After I start to publish the changed pages, I get this message: "Front page has determined that changes you have made to the navigation structure conflict with changes another author has made to the web you are publishing to. What do you want to do?" - Do not replace the navigation structure of the destination web. - Replace the navigation structure of the destination web. - Let FrontPage merge the changes. I have tried selecting each of these choices, but got the same result each time. Publishing of all pages starts and is interrupted by the error message: "Could not find web server ...." about 2 or 3 hours later. I can tell you more about what I have tried if you ask, but I've probably written more than enough already. - Peter

Hi Jaybee: Thanks for your reply. 1. Let's hope that, as you say, some people familiar with using FP to publish their web sites will be able to explain why FP is trying to publish 'all pages', rather than just 'changed pages'. This seems to be happening whether I ask FrontPage to do the publishing by comparing the pages OR by comparing the time stamps on the pages. 2. I have discussed possible reasons for the uploads stopping with my host (FastHosts). Publishing does not always happen at the same time, which suggests to me that it is probably something rather more complex than a simple time or data limit. My speed of publishing seems fairly consistent at about 75Mb per hour. My publishing has been intrerrupted by the error message: "could not find web server ..." after I have published about275Mb, then after about 150Mb, then after about 110Mb then after about 175Mb. My host (FastHosts) tells me that they do not have any time limits or data limits on uploads. However, they accept that I am having problems and in their last message to me, they said: "If you give us specific times as to when you get cut off, we can check the server logs to see if there is anything there that correllates with this. If that is the case, then you would need to find another method of publishing this." I don't know how to interpret their final sentence. They have previously mentioned using FTP to publish, then 're-instating FP extensions' and doing 'recalc hyperlinks' on their servers. I'm not wanting to do that because on a previous occasion, I discovered that 're-installing FP extensions' for my site was 'timing out'. The host had to take down the whole site and it was out of action for about 3 days. Also, and I have found that 'recalc hyperlinks works well on my own PC but always 'times out' when I try it on the site held on FastHosts server. - Peter

RE: Problems publishing "changed pages" - 1/27/2007 19:02:47
Hello again: I'll try to keep this message simple, and hope that somebody can help. I'm still having problems publishing changes to my web site. 1. When I try to publish 'all pages' my attempts to publish 'time out'. I'm not too concerned about that if I can continue from where I left off. However, when I try again to publish, it starts again at the first page and times out again. 2. I have been trying to publish 'changed pages' (using date to select them). When I do that, the computer attempts to publish all the pages on the site. When I try again (after a 'time out') publishing begins again at the first page. 3. I have been trying to publish 'changed pages' (comparing the pages, rather than use date stamps). The computer begins to publish all pages on the site. When I try again (after a 'time out') publishing normally begins where I left off. This is what I was hoping for, as it should eventually let me publish the whole site. However, part-way through one my publishings using this method, it went back to the first file. I've now been timed out 11 times, and have been publishing for several hours. Does anybody have suggestions as to what has been happening and what I should do next? Thanks: - Peter

Hello again: Problem solved! I'm no longer needing any help with this subject. Thanks. I eventually managed to publish the whole site again. The publishing gradually worked its way through the site publishing another batch of pages eact time - in 17 stages, the first 16 ending with 'time-out's. Now the publishing of 'changed pages' is working well again (and taking about 20 seconds, rather than 16 hours!) - Peter
