css old - flash new (!) - 1/26/2007 8:02:00
my client was told this by someone (don't know who)
"...using css code will basically bring my site to appropriate size, regardless of the monitor or pixels involved. I was recently told that css is considered 'old code' and that such tasks are being done better with flash.
IS this true??"
i'm not sure even where to start on that one :)

Personally, and this is just my humble opinion, I think there's a small place for Flash on websites, but it's only a small place. I suppose in some genres, Flash is a suitable medium to use, but on the whole Flash heavy sites do tend to be naff. Banners with stuff flying in on the whole are unnecessary "fluff" IMHO.
I only use Flash in a very limited way, and that's for slideshows where even script.aculo.us doesn't even quite do it, and I have something that "needs" the nice transitional effects you can only get with Flash. Even then you've got potential accessibility problems. Unless you're using the high-end Flash software, chances are whatever you're using to convert your pics to a nice slideshow isn't going to create you an accessible player. That said, unless it's something that requires something extra fancy, I can usually do something in Animation Shop as a gif.
Yes, flash games for example, and even some flash navigation (with an accessible alternative) can benefit a site, but trying to compare Flash and CSS is like comparing a lump of cheese and an elephant. They're two entirely different things, with totally different uses. Okay, I don't know that much about Flash, but AFAIK you can't change the background colour of your entire site using Flash, or resize the text by changing a couple of characters, or change the order your content's displayed in.

This is a funny post... one or the other? what about both. I use Flash and CSS and/or xml (or other databases) together. So i can change the background of a flash Main stage or any movie clip/button property and placement as easy as editing the CSS for the flash file. Hmmm... this post is still funny. The initial setup for flash is either easier or more difficult, the reality of flash is that if you don't understand the libraries and how to use whats available then actionScipting can be tough, but then again so can any programming or scripting language. I like using flash with xml cause it has a built in connector, where as with say JS you have to create the connector. I hate flash for forms cause they're so bloated. I hate I love I hate I love.... this is still a funny post

Flash, like Javascript should be used to enhance the page. CSS is part of the structure of the site - so it's like comparing apples and oranges. They should have different tasks to do on a site.

i assume form the question that the person is suggesting that flash would be better to produce a fluid layout, rather than just css, which isn't true, at least not for an all flash page ;)
