update and append fields - drw - 11/6/2001 15:14:00
I have successfully created and tailored a database, submit page and a couple of different results pages using DRW. They are all working well and I'm ready for the next step... linking to a page where the database fields can be changed, appended or filled-in if empty.

On these pages and links from here and the rest of the OutFront website as well as the MS Kb, I have found a variety of information pointing to varioius ways to kind of do this. I've tried most of them as best I could and even tried the DRW database editor set up and can't seem to get anything to work the way I want.

I think if I could settle on the best way to go and then just work to get that way perfect, I would keep from slitting my wrists over this thing.

So, my question is this (finally, she gets to it)...

If you had a brand new database created ONLY for this website and everything set up for submitting and viewing the data set up just as FP2002 directs you to with DRW - no hand made anything - how would you then proceed to offer up a page or pages for updating, adding to and or appending that database?

Would you use the DRW database editor pages? Would you create your own? If how would you start?

Oh, FP2002 with FP2002 extensions on server.

Thanks in advance for any help and hope my questions aren't too vague or too lame... i've been at this for 2 days straight and don't feel like I'm making much progress...

Using FP2002, its actually quite easy now (compared with 2000!)

Wave you seen how to make the basic wizard start?

Oh yes, I used that nifty feature to create the submission page and the results page and the database editor page.

The latter is what isn't working. And, it won't allow you to use the DRW to twiddle with it. BUT, I just found a couple of KB articles which may hold the answer.

If I get it fixed, I will absolutely share what I learned right here. And, while I'm here, may I please say thank you? Your tutorials and tips and tricks and forums have made me way way way much smarter than I was a week ago! Thank you!

Ok, I now have totally, successfully (kind of - see below), built everything. Keep in mind this is all FP2002 with 2002 extensions on the server.

I used DRW to build the database, build the submit page, the results page and the dataabase editor. I had to do massive tailoring to get it to look right but all the pages seemed to like my stylesheet so everything now looks nice and works.

Here are a few tips:

1. After the wizard is done and your pages are built and your database is built, go into the database directly and make sure all your fields allow zero length. The default is 'no' so you have to change every field to 'yes'.
2. If you are using TimeStamp - check out the MS KB articles: Q289317 and Q287147.
3. I still have yet to get it to work with any other date fields. Text and Number work fine.

I have a few more tweaks - but they are really more version 2 items. I'm one happy camper with version 1 so I'll probably wallow with it a while.

#1 Yes, its one of the design feature that would be nice to change with ADO

You can do it in SQL server, but unfortunately not with access.

Itll save a lot of heartache if all fields are allow zero from the very start!
