Boot/Setup XP Home from CD-Rom - 1/26/2007 22:34:21
Well, my comp is getting full of a bunch of crud that would take too long to get rid of manually. I want to reboot my computer, but my dad threw away the CD that would reboot my windows xp. I really dont want to download a boot from microsoft.com. Is there a way for me to obtain another CD?

If you bought the CD from a computer shop like Dell or HP, then you should give them a call and ask for another CD. If you didn't buy through them, you can try to use a friend's XP cd.

I always backup every CD/DVD that I buy, just in case something happens to it.

Dell will send you a new one provided you can prove that your machine shipped with XP. I assume HP and others will do the same. Do not tell them that it was thrown away though. It was lost in a house move.

You can only use a friend's CD if you have your own product key. If it's a Dell machine then the key will be on a Windows sticker attached to the machine. Don't be tempted to use your friend's key. If you do when one of you tries to download or upgrade or get fixes, it will be flagged as an illegal copy.
