I'm trying to help a friend create a CD with his very simple Web site (no frames, no forms, just HTML files linked to each other) on it along with some setup files for Acrobat Reader, etc. Everything works great except for one thing. The hyperlinks for the setup files (in .exe form) don't run the setup file. It brings up a 'save to disk or run from current location' option instead. Is there any way to have the hyperlink start the setup file directly instead of displaying this dialog box? If I click on the setup file directly (using Windows Explorer to access it either on the CD or on the hard drive), the setup file starts right up. What are we doing wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm. try creating a batch file (.bat) and have the batch file run the setup files.

I believe that you cannot run the set-up files directly from the website is because an .exe file is extremly dangerous to run on a website you may not know that there is a virus attached until it is too late. This is why you get the option to download or run from current location. I believe you are trying to set-up acrobat reader so that you can read pdf files. Once this reader is set-up on a computer it can read pdf files.

Thanks for the replies. The reason we didn't go with a batch file is that not everyone will need the three setup files (only one is for Acrobat Reader, the other two are for other utilities), and the users need to be able to pick and choose which ones they need based on what they already have installed. I didn't know if there was a way for FrontPage to work around this or not. Right now the setup files are simply hyperlinked to the main HTML page.

As Kitchenman said, this cannot be done on a website. If someone ever did find a way to autorun an exe file, it would be the subject of a new security update to disable this function again. Also, some programs require a reboot after installation. Check to make sure whether Acrobat requires this or not and try the 'run from current location' to see if this will work.
