Folders, extensions, w3c and seo ? - 1/31/2007 12:14:55
Hi all,

Its been ages since I visited this excellent forum and im glad to see all is well :)

Unfortunately, expressions does not make me feel that "all is well" !

Ive just ftp'd 1 of the pre built templates for testing and im totally horrified to see fp server extensions and 20 million folders sitting on my server :)

I thought microsoft had dropped all this nonsense with expressions but it appears not.

I want to create fast loading websites that validate with w3c and are 100% search engine friendly. So should I stop using expressions right now or am i missing something ?

Your advice, as always will be appreciated.

Mick

EH? Something is not right there. I uploaded one of the templates when the Beta 2 launched and I have no FPSEs available on that host. It all works fine and there are the bare minimum of pages. One html for each page and a few image folders plus 4 css files.

Having said that I did use a separate FTP to put it up there.

Which version of EW are you using?

Hi Jay,

You can now see why I was so horrified.
A folder for every single page plus sub folders and vti' s cnf for everything ! Eeeeeeeeeek

Im using the free beta ctp1

Ive tried the expressions ftp and my own ftp.

When I looked at the templates I thought "great, some decent looking templates with style sheets and strict coding" but none of them are any good to me if the server ends up looking like a car boot sale !

Any suggestions would be great as im keen to get into the whole css thing and start building compliant sites that are seo compatible.

Cheers

Get rid of Beta 1. Not sure if you can still get hold of 2 as they've released the real thing and I'm darn sure this thing is going to time out very soon.

If you have any concerns talk to Tom. He uses EW all the time.

You looking for an alternative to Office? Give Open Office a go - it's free, it has pretty much all of the functionality of Office packages plus some nice extra bits and you can save documents with M$ extensions if you prefer.

Open Office is ACE for replacing MS Office. It's developed by Sun so it's not a throwaway. I've been very impressed with it, just make sure you save your documents in the MS formats so others can read them.

That doesn't help with EW though. You can get an upgrade through Amazon pretty cheap. There's a link to the left for $89.99

[edit] Re cheap, that's as compared to what it costs us in the UK.... DOUBLE!! :)

Thanks,

I need publisher and word 2007 for files that are submitted to me in those formats. I will keep an eye out for special offers.

Ive been looking all morning for someone in the u.k. who actually has ew upgrade in stock ! Amazon say 1 to 2 weeks which means it isnt in stock. Problem is that I need it by yesterday at the latest.

Am I right in saying that the boxed upgrade version comes with loads of wonderful pre-built templates, or am I pushing my luck and sould only expect the same ones as the demo ?

Cheers

Mick

No idea. I've not seen a real copy yet. Some of the UK MVPs have got the full version but I don't know any who've installed it.

Pigs, my beta just expired too. I have a feeling that it's not officially released here for 2 weeks but I can find out on Saturday , not much help to you though is it.

Open office will open MS format files. Not sure what happens with the access clone though.

I don't know if it's available but you could try searching for a download from a US site. Probably a bit too new.

Whatever you do, completely uninstall the beta plus all bits and pieces.

Phone your local PC World. Mine are saying they have a couple in stock.

Right now I'm off on a scanner hunt as mine just died.

I had a look and pcworld sowed up out of stock for all under my postcode search.
It appears that the u.k. is yet to receive a shipment of upgrades but has clearly received a shipment of the full product.............hmmm, gues what im thinking about that !

Im about to post a new thread that will make you all say "oh no, not this again"
