Copperplate Gothic font requested by client (Full Version)

A client has requested that a temporary page be created using the 'Copperplate Gothic' font to create some bold announcements re. a site coming soon.

1. Is this font commonly available to people viewing websites?

2. Should I advise him that this font choice may not be advisable?

3. I guess I would need some similar font alternatives to add to the font listing in the stylesheet. Choosing similar fonts could well be difficult. Any suggestions on this? This seems to be fairly wide font.

I would advise him as to why the font choice would not be a good idea. I would then suggest to use the font in a GRAPHIC for the bold announcements. That way your guaranteed to get the font to display to all visitors. This should make your client happy right?[;)]

If for some reason your client still decides against the graphic but still wants to use the font.....then so be it. It's their site and you advised on the pros and cons.

Besides, the page will only be temporary as you stated

This is a useful page: http://www.codestyle.org/css/font-family/sampler-CombinedResultsFull.shtml It lists the % of mac and pc users who have a particular font installed. Currently Copperplate Gothic is available on only 48% of PCs.

If he's determined then you can use an image as Swoosh suggested as long as it's just for something brief like a heading or "coming soon". You don't want to use an image for anything more than that as it causes accessibility issues and Search Engines can't read them.

What I might do if he wants it for more than a heading would be to specify alternatives in the CSS - you like: 

#whatever {font-family: Copperplate Gothic, Times New Roman, Georgia, serif;}


(you might need to put quotes around the copperplate gothic name - I haven't checked). That way - the client gets their way but it won't look horrendous for everyone else.

you need quotes around anything that isn't one word: so "Copperplate Gothic", "Times New Roman"

That font website gives me the info I need, Tailslide, to make the point to the client. Great!!
