Dial-up connection error - 2/1/2007 16:54:29
I'm running a training course on Saturday, for which part of it is a live demo of a site and forum, and tonight I've had the second of two sessions trying to test the equipment set-up to try and get a dial-up connection working (the venue's unfortunately just out of range of a couple of wireless hotspots).
Last week i managed to get no connection whatsoever when I tried to get the dial-up running - no dial-tone apparently, despite that phone point working okay otherwise. I suspect that may have been due to a dodgy phone extension lead.
Tried again tonight with a different one (one that I use at home in emergencies) which should work okay. This time it dials, gets to the verifying username and password stage (though it takes ages), but then I get an error - Error 721: The remote computer did not respond". I tried it with three different dial-up accounts (which have worked recently for me elsewhere) - same error with all of them.
Apparently all of the phone lines at the venue are digital, apart from the fax line, which is analogue, and the fax works just fine - I also tried it on that line. Same error.

If you connect an ordinary phone to the jack, what happens when you dial the same number the PC is trying to dial?

Womble,
Very same thing happened to me couple of years back on my old Dell desktop. Bell South Tech Support said it wasn't on their end. Sure enough, it turned out the modem driver was corrupted. Go to Control Panel/Device Manager/Modems/Driver/Hardware Update Wizard, then check "No, not at this time" in response to the Can Windows connect .... question. Windows will search your system then reinstall the clean driver.
Sure hope this helps
