.fax Extension not working to download - 2/5/2007 10:06:18
I have a site which links numerous data files...be it an excel file, word doc, or an image file. They all display fine and the user can download the without any issues.

However, when I get to the .fax extension, I get a page cannot be displayed on every one I have...and I can't download them either...it says "Internet explorer was not able to open this internet site. The request is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later"

Any ideas? The file is there, I have checked that.

In IIS you can add a mime type for downloading.

(In IIS Manager) Select "Properties" of the server machine (not the web) and click "MIME types...". Click "New" and add the extension. I'd try a mime type of "application/download" if you're not sure but you can usually get the application name if you have it installed on your machine by checking the file types on your local machine and use the same name as there.

It should work fine as application/download but it won't display in a browser window unless you associate a specific application with it.

Hope that helps.

That sounds good to me; however, when I click on the link after chaning .fax to application/download in the mime types of my IIS, it still just brings up a link to the file in IE and page can't be displayed.
