My main PC is so well behaved. Once I get the blessed thing linked to the network everything runs smoothly - well most of the time.

Now my laptop. Oh yes I now have one now so don't give me the shocked, surprised and 'welcome to the modern day Golfer' look that I know you all wish to do

Now to the point.

The laptop links to the network automatically which is great. However it keep dropping out of the network and then re-connecting. Can some one offer suggestions as to what is going on and how I can fix this.

For your information I am about 15 feet away from the thingy (router?). My PC is more than twice that distance away and on a floor above.

As you can appreciate I am fed up with link dropping more often than a pair of tarts drawers.[;)]

Take the laptop into the room with the hub and see if it keeps dropping the connection when it's close to it. If it doesn't then you'll need to try moving the laptop around to where it gets a clear signal as something is interfering with it.

If it does then there's a problem with the settings. Harv had it recently when he set his desktop up wireless and that's all of a foot away from the hub. It turned out that Windows had taken over the settings and he had to turn those off and allow the Belkin stuff to do its own thing.

Not sure exactly what he did but I can find out if you need it.

Probably of little use to you in this situation, but my solution was to spend 3 days trying to get the damned thing to stay connected for more than a few seconds - again within sight of the router (thingy), get totally p*****d off with it and leave it for a year, stringing ethernet cables all over the house, try again a year later and the damned thing connects within 5 minutes and stays connected. [:)][8D]

Thanks for the comments. Not prepared to leave it for a year at my age womble.[:)]

I will do as jaybee has suggested and go and take the laptop to have an intimate time with the hub.

I shall return (now who said that - apart from me that is)

My PC laptop is exactly the same Ian. Oddly, my iMac never ever drops offline - not once. Result is that I barely use the PC laptop - for surfing I always use the mac.

Repoting back.

Well I have tried using the laptop in the kitchen where the hub is situated. Worked ok for a while then started to drop out again.

Could it be that the hub is positioned near a fridge/freezer (2 feet away) or a central heating boiler (12 feet away)?

Does a full wine rack mess up the transmission? If so should I drink the contents of the bottles and try again?

My main PC upstairs has the same problems but not as bad as the laptop.

My hub is a D-Link DSL G604T. Does anyone know how good/bad/unreliable this is?

Could it be that everything is probably working normally here and it's my distance from the telephone exchange is causing an issue with my link to the ISP?

caz -> RE: Bl**dy wireless (2/8/2007 6:56:54)

I think that the location near fridge and boiler could be a clue [:D]

jaybee -> RE: Bl**dy wireless (2/8/2007 6:59:50)

Yup, bet you'll find if you check that it drops out every time the fridge or boiler kicks in.

golfer -> RE: Bl**dy wireless (2/8/2007 7:04:02)

Thanks. I am now going for a hub relocation exercise.

May even relocate the wine from the bottles to me some time during the day.[:)]

now that, my friend, is a true 'broadband connection'.

nrhatigan -> RE: Bl**dy wireless (2/12/2007 7:05:27)

Hopefully your connection is now all fine.

Just in case, I found that there was a lot of interference with mine so tried connecting on different channels to get the best -my router shipped with a default of channel 11 so I went for t for a different one 3 which improved the connection.

golfer -> RE: Bl**dy wireless (2/12/2007 8:48:11)

Thanks for your response. Not tried relocating my hub yet. If that doesn't do the trick I will try your idea.[:)]

Giving it serious attention.[;)]

I had similar problems a while back with the wireless not behaving. I would get the laptop to connect to my network, but anytime once in a while it would loose it, and try to connect to another (neighbor's) network, and usually fail.

I think the solution was a change in the configuration: Look in Wireless Network Connection Properties, in the Wireless Networks tab, in the lower right there's a button named Adavnced. I unchecked 'automatically connect to nonpreferred networks' and I think that did it. Maybe there was also an issue of using 'any available network (access point preferred)' vs. 'access point (infrastructure network) only'. Currently I use any available network but haven't had disconnection problems for a while.

I also used to have some gadget that came with the laptop for managing the wireless (weirdless?) networks and show their strength and distance, but prevented me from using the Windows built-in utilities for configuring the wireless. Those gadgets were cute when they worked but in essence I found them to be more distracting and make it more complex to get a reliable connection and stick with it, so I disabled those. My laptop is a TshibaSatellite A105-S4094 (and I hate the Intel G945 chip on it, it sucks bigtime for 3D and graphics - other than that I'm happy with this model)

golfer -> RE: Bl**dy wireless (3/22/2007 3:38:03)

Thanks for the info staigerman.

My problem was in fact, as pointed out by our 'lurvely ladies', the fridge and boiler.

My idea of relocating the wine didn't work but it was fun so who cares.[:)]

caz -> RE: Bl**dy wireless (3/22/2007 6:27:55)

About time that you put us all out of our misery, you old codger. How many cases of wine bit the dust before you moved your hub [;)]

jaybee -> RE: Bl**dy wireless (3/22/2007 6:34:54)

Ahhhh the miracles of technology. Brought to its knees by a fridge and a boiler. [:D]

Ladies and Gentlemen, the new Pathfinder space mission to Pluto and beyond is due to launch at 2pm precisely. Please ensure all your fridges, freezers and TVs are turned off for the duration. Satellite dishes should be unplugged or removed from the roof to prevent transmission interference. (The last two shuttles re-routed automatically to the OC and Ramsey Street).

Anyone nearby with a mobile phone is requested to remove the battery unless they are online to our information call line which gives you live feedback on the launch. Calls are charged at $5k per minute or part thereof. Please seek permission from the bill payer before calling. Thank you.

Years ago I worked for an American Oil Corp who connected their International Network using Microwave transmitters. The link would always crash at the same time every day for no apparent reason. After some serious investigation they found that the beam was routed directly across LAX airport and the 3pm freight flight, which left the ground further down the runway than the other flights, kept getting in the way.

Not sure how much wine went but I had plenty of assistance during the process. [:)]

Hub has behaved well recently so the bottles of champagne are still there waiting for an excuse to drink it.
