Bl**dy wireless - 2/7/2007 4:48:12
My main PC is so well behaved. Once I get the blessed thing linked to the network everything runs smoothly - well most of the time. Now my laptop. Oh yes I now have one now so don't give me the shocked, surprised and 'welcome to the modern day Golfer' look that I know you all wish to do Now to the point. The laptop links to the network automatically which is great. However it keep dropping out of the network and then re-connecting. Can some one offer suggestions as to what is going on and how I can fix this. For your information I am about 15 feet away from the thingy (router?). My PC is more than twice that distance away and on a floor above. As you can appreciate I am fed up with link dropping more often than a pair of tarts drawers.

My PC laptop is exactly the same Ian. Oddly, my iMac never ever drops offline - not once. Result is that I barely use the PC laptop - for surfing I always use the mac.

Repoting back. Well I have tried using the laptop in the kitchen where the hub is situated. Worked ok for a while then started to drop out again. Could it be that the hub is positioned near a fridge/freezer (2 feet away) or a central heating boiler (12 feet away)? Does a full wine rack mess up the transmission? If so should I drink the contents of the bottles and try again? My main PC upstairs has the same problems but not as bad as the laptop. My hub is a D-Link DSL G604T. Does anyone know how good/bad/unreliable this is? Could it be that everything is probably working normally here and it's my distance from the telephone exchange is causing an issue with my link to the ISP?

Hopefully your connection is now all fine. Just in case, I found that there was a lot of interference with mine so tried connecting on different channels to get the best -my router shipped with a default of channel 11 so I went for t for a different one 3 which improved the connection.

I had similar problems a while back with the wireless not behaving. I would get the laptop to connect to my network, but anytime once in a while it would loose it, and try to connect to another (neighbor's) network, and usually fail. I think the solution was a change in the configuration: Look in Wireless Network Connection Properties, in the Wireless Networks tab, in the lower right there's a button named Adavnced. I unchecked 'automatically connect to nonpreferred networks' and I think that did it. Maybe there was also an issue of using 'any available network (access point preferred)' vs. 'access point (infrastructure network) only'. Currently I use any available network but haven't had disconnection problems for a while. I also used to have some gadget that came with the laptop for managing the wireless (weirdless?) networks and show their strength and distance, but prevented me from using the Windows built-in utilities for configuring the wireless. Those gadgets were cute when they worked but in essence I found them to be more distracting and make it more complex to get a reliable connection and stick with it, so I disabled those. My laptop is a TshibaSatellite A105-S4094 (and I hate the Intel G945 chip on it, it sucks bigtime for 3D and graphics - other than that I'm happy with this model)
