terryt -> publishing problems (2/12/2007 19:39:54)

hi everyone - Could someone here tell me if there is a quick way to test if I am able to upload changes ? I posted here a while ago that I wasn't able to upload changes, etc. I reloaded office, and I thought my problems were over, but it looks to me like my changes are still not uploading. Is there a way to test to see what's going on for sure ?

TravelswCharlie -> RE: publishing problems (2/13/2007 0:08:22)

Are you sure you aren't being mislead by the fact that your website is in saved in your cache? Try just "refresh" your page and if that doesn't work, clean out your cache.

If that's not it, you may want to look into a problem I had a while back where I could not make changes.

It was kind of complicated and if I had to do it again, I'd look in old messages here for messages from Spooky to me, because he gave me the answer.

I don't remember the subject name but there won't be a lot of messages from Spooky to me, so that's what I would look for.

jurgen -> RE: publishing problems (2/13/2007 1:13:51)

To refresh a page with the latest updates just hold down "ctrl' and "shift" key, --> refresh.... that will pull the latest updates from the server.

treetopsranch -> RE: publishing problems (2/13/2007 8:21:21)

You could post your problem url here and maybe some of the outfront experts can also help.

terryt -> RE: publishing problems (2/13/2007 19:59:13)

Hi guys - I just tried the ctl/shift thing, and no change. I'm in the process of trying a few things at the web host. I just reloaded my FP extensions (or I think I did), but that didn't work either. I'm sure its some little thing that's disabled or not set right. If you guys want the url, its favoriteprojects.com
thanks, tt

swoosh -> RE: publishing problems (2/13/2007 20:03:00)

What changes should there be?

I really don't understand. All FTP programs hava a status window that tells you whats going on when you upload a file. Even FrontPage has a status line of little colored blocks that tell you what is being uploaded when you publish.

If you are not seeing any upload status than your changed files are not being uploaded.

terryt -> RE: publishing problems (2/14/2007 19:12:09)

When I publish, or hit the publish button, I get the progress bar working slowly from left to right for a few minutes. Because I see the progress bar working, I have always thought it must be uploading.

It looks as if its working, but after it "publishes" there is no change. At the end of the publish process, there is a small window that comes up and it says something like - click here to view your published website.

If I click on this and check what I now have, its my website from approx 1 yr ago (the same one that's currently on the web). If I go to: file/preview in browser, then I get the site the way it sits now in Frontpage. If I check my site on a computer at work, I see the same page I have had on the web from 1 yr ago.

For a long time, I just ignored it, but the whole issue is beginning to get to me. I should be able to make changes.

treetopsranch -> RE: publishing problems (2/15/2007 8:41:02)

Kinda sounds like your page is hung up in the server's cache. Maybe the extensions are shot. Like swoosh asked above, make a small change, let us know what that change should look like and post it here. You also can download Filezilla a free ftp program and open up your web and compare the dates of the files on the server with those on your computer. Don't transfer any files with filezilla as you will honk up the extensions. However, I looked at you index page and it looks like you are not using any extension stuff. (at least on that page)

terryt -> RE: publishing problems (2/17/2007 19:37:37)

My web host suggested that I get the latest office service pack, try installing it, and see if it makes any difference. I did that, and still nothing. I haven't shut off/on the computer yet, though.

Now I'm wondering if it might be something in my computer that's causing the problem. I have an e-machines computer and it came preloaded with a bunch of stuff. One of the things that's still screwing me up is Norton AV. I already had a two year contract with AVG, so I never used the Norton that was preinstalled. Even though I uninstalled it, there are remnants of it still here, and it still comes up everytime I try to start something like Powerpoint. I get a pile of error messages before I can even get the program going.

I'm thinking that maybe it's somehow doing something to
f--k up how Frontpage works, too. Could it be possible ?

treetopsranch -> RE: publishing problems (2/18/2007 9:25:31)

If those errors are caused by Norton then go here http://www.symantec.com and go to their support page. They have a error message diagnostics section. The also used to have tools for removing all of the Norton files that you were not able to delete.

The_magus -> RE: publishing problems (2/20/2007 3:27:50)

Dear Treetopranch:

I am also having trouble with bits and pieces of Norton which prevents me from installing Kasperky anti-virus program. Symantec have a Norton Killer program but it just tells me to uninstall Norton anti-virus and something about the fax program. These are not to the best of my knowledge on my computer - or at least I can't find them.

I'm now using the free AVG program and it seems to be working but I like Kaspersky because it sqeals like a pig having it's throat cut every time it finds a virus. Having spent a number of my formative love working on a pig farm I find this sound pleasant in a evil sort of way. Must be something wrong with my head but that's the way it is.

Cheers

Here's where/how to uninstall Norton stuff -

terryt -> RE: publishing problems (2/20/2007 20:40:07)

Ok, so I have just uninstalled the remnants of Norton that remained on my computer. And it looks like it actually worked. I also just tried publishing to my host, and it still will not publish.

I wonder if someone here could somehow check to see that I have the correct file/folder structure (Until a few weeks ago, I didn't even know that web folders were stored somewhere outside of the actual Frontpage program). Could my "can't publish" problem be caused by a screwy file/folder arrangement of my webpage(s) ?

The only problem is, I don't know if its possible to copy /paste this info. Maybe I could just send a facsimile more or less showing what I have.

Sunnie -> RE: publishing problems (3/2/2007 20:24:17)

Terry-
I am having the exact problem with one of my 7 sites. Up until 2 weeks ago - all was well. When I tried to publish new info on this one site (www.davidgoldbergdc.com) no changes will go through. It shows the changes being uploaded, and asks if you'd like to view the changes once published yet when you go to the site- no new changes show up.

I have cleared the cache. I have refreshed the FrontPage extentions. I previewed the site in a new browser (and the changes showed up there, but not in the WWW). I have spoken to my web hosting company. They have no idea what the problem is. (They hate Frontpage ).

I'm at my wits end and can not figure this out. I was hoping to find the answer here.
PS I do not use Norton Antivirus (I use Trend Micro P-cillan). So it has nothing to do with your Norton. The only thing I could think that I did recently was update some things Microsoft Automatic Updater suggested, yet I was able to publish new changes for my other sites- just not this one. ???

The change I am trying to upload is this one sentence- right at the top of the home page (but not in a shared border): Voted "Best Chiropractor 2006 in Boca Raton" by Boca Times Magazine

If someone out there can figure this out & can help- I'd appreciate it.
Thanks-
Sunnie

Sunnie -> RE: publishing problems (3/2/2007 21:49:28)

Hi again-

I found a related discussion from Terry and this was the answer to your problem:

"ok, so I reinstalled office, and it looks like everything is going to be ok. I just tried publishing to my page, and it works !!! Damn !!! I believe I screwed up a few things while trying to use the corrupted copy of office, (or whatever that was), but at least I can make changes/corrections again. Thanks so much to everyone that posted with things to try."

My Frontpage software is a separate software from my MSOffice. Would this make any difference to my situation? (I am having issues with my PC crashing lately -possibly due to my Outlook Program in MS Office. Is my version (Office 2000 Pro) becoming obselete with all the newer platforms out there in the WWW, like a VW engine in a Ferreri ??? My FP is also a 2000 version.

Help- please...[:(]

Larry M. -> RE: publishing problems (3/2/2007 21:51:56)

Sunnie,

www.davidgoldbergdc.com home page reads: Voted "Best Chiropractor 2006 in Boca Raton" by Boca Times Magazine

Always validate design site changes by viewing on a second computer.

Sunnie -> RE: publishing problems (3/2/2007 22:05:06)

Thanks Larry,
I did check it on my PC at my job, my home PC & my son's PC as well but they all do not show the changes. I can't believe you saw the change & we can't. My son & I both use Slimbrowser and I also tried it on IE7.
What browser are you using?

Larry M. -> RE: publishing problems (3/2/2007 22:06:59)

Yes it could if FrontPage is installed to the same directory as MSOffice. Check path statements. If they are the same both programs need to be uninstalled then reinstalled to different subdirectories.

Caution: the Outlook .pst file (all personal folder information) is part of Office so you will lose it on uninstall unless you have a reliable backup. I recommend Outback Plus - http://www.ajsystems.com/obp.html.

Sunnie -> RE: publishing problems (3/2/2007 22:14:52)

Thanks for the bad news..(I hate uninstalling & reinstalling large programs)...I will take your advice on the Outback Plus. (I lost all of my emails when I had a major crash last year...no way to retrieve this info either) I think I hate MS lately...LOL

Once again- what browser did you see the updated web site in?

Thanks again
Sunnie

Larry M. -> RE: publishing problems (3/2/2007 22:32:08)

IE7 with default settings on my desktop. Verifies in source code:

<tr>
<td width="3%" height="1"></td>
<td width="54%" height="1" valign="baseline" colspan="3">
<p align="center"><b><font size="4" color="#FFFF00">Voted </font><font size="4" color="#CC99FF"><br>
"<i>Best Chiropractor 2006 in Boca Raton</i>"</font><font size="4" color="#FFFF00"> <br>
by Boca Times Magazine</font></b>
</td>

Strangely, my Dell laptop with IE6 does not display 'Voted "Best Chiropractor 2006 in Boca Raton"
by Boca Times Magazine' nor does it show in the source code. Further, the 'Voted' statement does not display in FireFox either.

A real puzzle. Hopefully the OF Forum coders (the really smart guys and gals) will step in with a profound observation or three to help you resolve this [8D]

terryt -> RE: publishing problems (3/2/2007 22:38:12)

Hey Guys - I don't know what I was smoking that day, but I still cannot make changes to my site. I thought for sure that I had it made, but when I checked, none of the changes I uploaded were visible on the web. So, I'm still looking for a solution. I am really interested to see if others have had this problem, and how they solved it.

Sunnie -> RE: publishing problems (3/2/2007 23:28:29)

Larry-
Thanks for making me see that I am not going nuts.
Is this crazy or what?

I find no evidence af any new changes to my site- in any browser under View Source. It's crazy that you saw it on one of your PCs ????????????????????

Yes- Terry & I will keep our fingers crossed that someone will rescue us.
Sunnie

Sunnie -> RE: publishing problems (3/3/2007 0:01:18)

Ahh Ha! I did it!
OK -This is what worked for me.
I opened up the web in FrontPage. I checked the FOLDERS View, and there she was! A ghost in my machine
I noticed I had TWO index pages- one with Index.htm and one with Index.html (I originally made the site with the htm suffix on all the pages, so I kept this one). I deleted the index.html and VOILA...the updates were published sucessfully! Yippee!

I have no idea how this index.html got into my folders, but I don't care at this point. As long as I figured it out. So- when in doubt, look at your Folders view and make sure your filesare in order.

Sunnie

terryt -> RE: publishing problems (3/3/2007 0:33:12)

That's funny, because I just checked mine, and I too had my index page with the file extension of .html, when all my other pages were .htm. I changed it to .htm and tried publishing. Is seems to have made no difference to mine - still will not publish. I'm going to try again tomorrow. I always suspected this problem might have been related to the file structure, somehow.

The_magus -> RE: publishing problems (3/3/2007 1:47:05)

Good Morning:

I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem but I note that you report that your index page has an htm extension. I have the impression that you must use .html extension for the index page unless you use an .htaccess file to redirect it to htm.

This should have nothing to do with accessing other pages.

Why not try using a different FTP program such as WSFTP or Filezilla which allow you to see the folders/files on the server including the date time of the files on the site.

Cheers

Jack

Yep, I think this 2004 thread may provide the answer:

Both unnecessary & inadvisable - when connected to the server using the FrontPage publish command, local/host files with corresponding time-stamps are shown in alpha order. Two (or more) index files will be the giveaway.

Check with your host before deleting anything, however, because some servers only recognize index.html (mine with OutFront is one) and convert the local index.htm file to the html format during the publish function. Identical index file time-stamps validate the publishing effort regardless of the file extension configuration.
