Where can I find FPSE on my server? - 2/13/2007 5:34:04
Hi All

I hope someone can help me - I'm trying to upgrade my FPSE from 2000 to 2002 and even though I work in a 7500 employee strong IT company, no one knows how to do it! Someone showed me a "console" on the server last week, where we found the FPSE status and there was an option to upgrade to 2002, so 2000 IS installed, and it would seem that 2002 is installed on the server, but not in that particular webfolder. I can't get hold of the guy that showed it to me, and now I have a clock ticking over me from service control to get the piece of work finished or they will close my change request (which will then take me back to the beginning of a 4 week approvals process...mad I know!).

Can someone describe to me how I can find my way back to the "console" and how I can upgrade my FPSE please?

Thanks!

If you don't get an answer from the experts here, try the Microsoft knowledgebase. Keep in mind that Microsoft is no-longer supporting FP extensions but they may have your problem archived in their knowledgebase.

I doubt that you can even download the extensions any longer because of MS not supporting them. From what I can remember, they support some on a 64bit machine only for the time being. I think I still have one file if you would like it but I will admit that I do not suggest putting them on your server.

We removed the FPSE last year when we sold the business and never looked back

Hi Rosie and welcome to Outfront. I'm working from memory here and it's been a while but...

Working on the server, "Start" > "Control Panel" > "Adminstrative Tools" > "Internet Information Services" > Open the tree view up to see the site (assuming "Default Web Site" but it doesn't have to be), right click on it and select "Properties". You should have a tab for "Server Extensions". See if there's an upgrade button there.

Hi guys! Thanks for all your help... I've managed to find my way back to that familiar screen with your help :) What should I expect to happen when I choose "Upgrade Server Extensions 2002" from the all tasks option at webroot folder level?

I've done a "check server extensions" on the specific web folder I'm having problems with, and it corrected several things... lots of vti files that either didn't exist or were not executable. Any idea what this means? (total novice here, sorry!)

Thanks again!

Did you publish your site without Frontpage? FP creates the folders to help maintain the Frontpage website. Frontpage relies on information in the _vti folders to help know what files to publish, how to display your website, how to handle certain components, etc

Hi Corey

I normally publish using Frontpage, however when I last did a full site publish, there were a load of permissions problems on the server and so I had to do a drag n drop instead, very frustrating!

Was that via Frontpage, Internetr Explorer, or FTP?

It was actually using two Explorer windows, through mapped drives!

If you did not publish via Frontpage, and copied files over, you need to delete the _vti folders and then re-install the FPSE.

Hi Corey

There are _vti folders in every folder on my site (there are a lot of folders!)... and when I try to delete them, I either get "access denied" or once they're gone, they reappear. Is this normal, or is this part of the FPSE problem?

_vti folders

Corect me if I am wrong, but my understanding of those folders is that FrontPage Extensions place them in every folder. Those vti files are used to keep track of your revised pages so that it can handing the publishing feature.

They are placed in every folder yes - but you cannot copy those folders from one server to another via FTP or terminal services, or IE etc. They will be recreated on the new server when published via Frontpage
