TravelswCharlie -> GIMP too bossy! Can someone help? (2/16/2007 15:07:58)

I downloaded and installed GIMP.

I did not intend to tell it to integrate itself as my default image editor, but that's what happened.

Each time I clicked on an image... even the smallest, most insignificant, instead of the image popping right up via whatever WinXP had installed as default, GIMP would load, taking several seconds.

I found that unacceptable, so "uninstalled" GIMP... but that did not uninstall the links GIMP had embedded in each image.

Now, when I click on an image, I get an error message, saying it can't find the GIMP file.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

CJ

Go to your explorer (my documents or so) right click on any image --> select 'open with' and 'choose program' ..... choose the program you want the image to open in, ..... in the same window at the bottom left click 'always use the selected program.......'

During installation Gimp is asking if you want it as default. Guess you missed it. Can't blame the program for it.... [:D]

OK, that's good to know. That means I can safely re-install the program, but just watch to be sure I don't let it become the default, right?

I also had seen... but forgotten about... the little box to click to say "always open this kind of file with this program".

I diid that and now all is well.

Thanks very much!

CJ

Yes you can safely re-install. Gimp is actually a pretty good program considering the "price".... [;)]

Yes... that's the reason I tried it... I read a message here that said that.

I don't knowi if it will do what I want to do or not.

What I was looking for was... I wanted to reduce the resolution of a high-resolution photo, but leave the photo the same size.

I used "compress", but that reduced the size so it no longer fit my page correctly.

I wanted to reduce the resolution so the photo would load faster, and I thought the lower resolution would still look ok.

What would be the right command?

Thanks,

Use the image scale option and reduce the resolution

d a v e -> RE: GIMP too bossy! Can someone help? (2/17/2007 2:37:41)

reducing the resolution (i.e. ppi pixels per inch - sometimes referred to as dpi, dots per inch) only affects the size for print, not for the web ;)
