roadrunr -> Google Site Map Generator - Need help (2/18/2007 15:02:19)

I am having problems getting other pages of my site listed with Google. I have looked at the Google Sitemap Generator and printed all 16 pages! I was hoping for a simple tool, but now I am really confused. I use Front Page. Is Google Sitemap Generator usable with FP? I was hoping that the generator just looked at my files and made me what I needed. Can someone give me some advice? Is the generator simple or totally complicated? What does the coding look like for a simple web site? If I can see a simple example, that might answer my questions. Am I going to have these type problems with Yahoo and MSN too?

Download GSiteCrawler. This will create a Google Sitemap for you.

Yahoo was using urllist.txt and it was just a listing of your URLs but both MSN and Yahoo are working together with Google to create a sitemap protocol that all three can read

Hi Corey -

Thanks, I did download the GSiteCrawler and use it. But Google Webmaster Tools Sitemap tab says I have...

" Sitemap errors for http://www.jpcustomseats.com/ Errors Unsupported file format. Your Sitemap does not appear to be in a supported format. Please ensure it meets our Sitemap guidelines and resubmit."

And I don't have a clue to what their problem is. I did save the two files that the Crawler created and I uploaded both files to Front Page and then I saved and published. Then I waited for Google to show thier Sitemap info. Do you have any thoughts to what went wrong? I thought maybe something was corrupt. So I deleted the two files from Front Page. Then I re-crawled to create two new files to upload. But I again had the same error message. So now I am lost.

coreybryant -> RE: Google Site Map Generator - Need help (2/19/2007 14:39:37)

What's your URL to your sitemap?

roadrunr -> RE: Google Site Map Generator - Need help (2/19/2007 18:30:10)

GSiteCrawler is showing ... http://www.jpcustomseats.com/

and Google Webmaster Tools is showing my site as http://www.jpcustomseats.com/

coreybryant -> RE: Google Site Map Generator - Need help (2/20/2007 7:48:10)

What's the URL to your Google sitemap that you created and uploaded? It should end with an XML file extension

roadrunr -> RE: Google Site Map Generator - Need help (2/20/2007 13:50:59)

It is http://www.jpcustomseats.com/Site_Map.htm. Are you saying I need to rename the site map page to Site_Map.XML and hyperlink my main page to the same? When I visit other sites on the web that use a site map it always shows it as .htm or .html. I guess theirs are wrong?

coreybryant -> RE: Google Site Map Generator - Need help (2/20/2007 16:52:02)

That is not a Google sitemap. That is a sitemap for people. robots.txt will help explain a google sitemap. The program I suggested should have generated one for you. Read my responses on the above thread - the title, well it was not really a robots.txt error but something else.

One example of a Google sitemap: http://www.coreybryant.org/sitemap.xml

Corey -

I used EML ECHO generator and got a very similar sitemap. I saved it in Front Page and then viewed it. It shows me the following ....

The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Invalid at the top level of the document. Error processing resource 'file:///C:/Documents and Settings/My Docum...

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>

I did not use style sheet. I open a new blank page. Now what?

coreybryant -> RE: Google Site Map Generator - Need help (2/21/2007 7:03:58)

So did you use GSiteCrawler? I am really confused because I thought you used that.

I am not familiar with EML ECHO at all. What are the first 10 lines of this XML page that was created - you should be able to open it in Frontpage

roadrunr -> RE: Google Site Map Generator - Need help (2/21/2007 11:18:02)

I have tried both. The thing is that I used GSiteCrawler with another site without insident! I was sucessful and Goggle is fine with it. It is this site that is giving me the headache.

Here are some lines with GSiteCrawler:

Get rid of these three lines
<?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="gss.xsl"?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84 http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9/sitemap.xsd">

roadrunr -> RE: Google Site Map Generator - Need help (2/22/2007 14:16:49)

Okay. I gave that a try. It did not work. I got this message:

This Sitemap has the following errors:

Here is what my 10 lines look like now in order to receive this error:

coreybryant -> RE: Google Site Map Generator - Need help (2/22/2007 16:09:33)

Sorry I had you delete one too many lines. The top should be like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84 http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9/sitemap.xsd">
and then all your links to your your site and the closing tag.

http://www.coreybryant.org/sitemap.xml - this is my example on my site. It is pretty straightforward. The GSitecrawler added that XML styles that you really don't need. Other than that it is a good little program.

roadrunr -> RE: Google Site Map Generator - Need help (2/26/2007 2:00:41)

Well finally, I got it to work. I use a satellite internet provider due to I live way off the beaten path. We have been going thru extreme weather. I think somehow something crucial was not loading all the way. Today, I started over again from scratch and all went just fine the first time. Thanks for your help, Corey.

Now, I get to wait and see if more of my pages of the site get listed.

coreybryant -> RE: Google Site Map Generator - Need help (2/26/2007 8:57:59)

Glad it all worked out for you. Good luck with the site!
