How to change DNS Server information - 2/20/2007 18:42:53
I thought that the Registrar is the one responsible for changes to Domain Name System Server (DNS Server) information ... once requested, of course. Now EasySpace(.com) is saying this to me: "If you have changed the nameservers away from Easyspace, any DNS changes you make from here will not take effect. We have checked your domain and it does not reside on our nameservers - therefore you will not be able to update your zone file settings through the control panel". I'm trying to move the hosting of songland.co.uk from Gisol(.com) to Parcom.net, where I've opened an account. Gisol tells me I should ask the Registrar to do it, and EasySpace says I can't! My site is down and I'm losing e-mails, I know I am. What's with this cr**? I'm not pleased ... or am I missing something? Help... (I'll be back on Wednesday, a.m., Brussels time). Thanks, John.

What the domain registrar is saying, is that if you use their DNS information, then it will be managed at the registrar (usually for a parked page, or hosting if that is also done through the registrar). If you change this information, such as making it ns1.yourhost.com and ns2.yourhost.com, then your registrar no longer controls the DNS, your host is responsible for the DNS, since it is pointing to ns1.yourhost.com and ns2.yourhost.com. You need to ask your new host what the DNS should be, and then go to the registrar and change it to that. It looks like the domain is at ns20.gisol.com and ns21.gisol.com right now.

Hi, jaybee, hi, Bob, Thanks for the input. This morning, I managed (again) to find a way into the EasySpace Control Panel page for editing the DNS. I had already done this on Monday, but it hadn't worked. So I've given them a call, and apparently it should have worked - there had been a software glitch somewhere. They're going to confirm to me that the change has been made. It took 19th.Century telephone technology to get it done in the end. Funny old world... BTW, jaybee - thanks for the link to http://www.dnsstuff.com/ - useful knowledge for me. :) Have a fun day, both, John.

I totally agree. Sometimes it goes swimmingly, sometimes "it's a mess", to quote your good self. In fact I have to be fair to EasySpace: They answered the 'phone immediately - how about that? - and they've already confirmed by human-typed e-mail that the changes are underway. Bravo!
