Suddenly Slow Hibernation - 2/25/2007 3:16:45
My Windows/XP-SR2 platform (P4, 1.5GB, 3 HDD, ATI Radeon 9200 series dual-had AGP cntl) for years had hibernated in about 15-20 seconds.

I recently added the Radeon AGP cntl (replacing some no-name adapter originally provided by Gateway) and Net Framework 2.0 (required by the video driver) -- Net Framework 1.1 is still installed.

After this, hibernation required about 2 min 20 sec.

Downloaded latest patches for Net 2.0 from Microsoft: hibernation then required 1:49.

Defragged sys disk (Drive C), where the hibernation file (hiberfil.sys) is located: improved hibernation by 7 seconds.

Any suggestions as to how to restore fast hibernation?

Sounds like you have an additional layer of something that needs additional time to shut down.

I had something similar recently when I had changed the settings in the Group Policy Editor to clear the pagefile at system shutdown. Drove me bonkers for a couple of weeks until I remembered what I'd done and went back and reset it. Immediate fast closedown again. Apparently when it runs the clear it clears the hibernation file as well. It might be worth looking to see if that's been set somehow.

The other option is to try this it works for shutdown, whether it'll do the same for hibernation I've no idea as I never let the machine do that.

That suggested link lead me to this Microsoft web page:

(Used tinyurl because MS link was VERY long)

That didn't help my slow hibernation problem .... any other ideas??

Read on some forum (don't remember which) that you have to remove Net Framework 1.1 if you install 2.0. You might google Framework 2.0 to see if anything comes up.
