My Expression Beta had run its course so I uninstalled it last Friday. This morning FP refused to start and tried to "install" itself. Of course I didn't have the CD at work[&:] so it couldn't complete the install[:(]. I resorted to using a restore point from last Monday which got FP running again but now Expression is repeatedly attempting to install itself at randon intervals.[sm=ask.gif][sm=ask.gif]

jaybee -> RE: Very Annoying (2/26/2007 9:19:23)

I had exactly the same thing. Uninstalled EW beta and FP refused to work without me digging out the disk. So I did and I kept getting error messages to say the file it need wasn't on the CD even though it clearly was as I could see it.

I got so annoyed with the whole thing I zapped FP completely and then for good measure, killed Office 2003 as well and went and got Open Office.

I now have a full version of EW on the machine but no FP and no MS Office.

Tempting concept though the machine technically belongs to corporate and they have rules [;)]. I have now reinstalled the beta (though it's expired and won't work) and the stupid thing STILL tries to install itself.[:'(]

Mike, it sounds like that beta version upset your windows registry. Have you looked at the MS knowledgebase to see if they have a solution?

Do the corporate guys allow you to install beta software on their computer? [8|]

I couldn't find anything at M$ that seemed to apply but (hopefully not speaking too soon) after a couple of install attempts expression seems to have given up.[;)]

They allow me a little more leaway as the local IT contact (and webmaster for the company website).[:D]

Not nice. Not nice at all!

Didi you ever work your way around that?

jaybee -> RE: Very Annoying (3/15/2007 15:44:05)

No, I'm perfectly happy with Open Office which has the same features as MS Office, plus some, and it's free. Developed by Sun Systems so it's not a heap of old rope.

A few things are on different menus but once you've found them you're off and running.

I haven't bothered to reinstall FP as I was getting quite fond of EW and then it threw a major spanner in the works so I'm reconsidering. I might just not bother with either of them.

You can get portable OpenOffice that runs on a flash drive without anything installing to the hard drive at all - along with Portable Firefox and a host of other goodies. You can download them from Portableapps.com. Being lazy, I couldn't be bothered to load them all onto a flash drive myself (and I've mislaid my spare flash drive), so I got one pre-loaded from 8daysaweek, so now I can use OOo at work as well.

All I've got to do now is figure out how to either get round the firewall/proxy and get Firefox access to the internet or wear them down enough with constant questions that they get fed up of me and let me use it to keep me quiet. IT's tech support are ignoring my queries as to why it won't connect so far though. [&o]

Phase 2 of "Operation Firefox" starts on Monday. [sm=EbilGrin.gif] If I can come up with some sort of convincing argument as to why I absolutely must use Firefox, I'll be all set.

Go on - ditch M$. You know you want to. [;)]

Not sure if that's directed at jaybee or me but as for my problem I installed the upgrade for EW and that seems to have cured the problem.

I assume you've set the proxy server up in FF and it still won't connect? I never had a problem with them (corporate) blocking FF but maybe that's a privilege they allow me to check the sites in multiple browsers (or maybe that comes next week[&o]. Odd though I haven't been able to update to the latest version...[&:] Of course all I need to do is bring the laptop home and connect.[;)]
I can't use IE though since I upgraded to 7.0 and corporate has banned it from use. I'm not going through the trouble of backsliding to 6.[:D]

Thanks for the input. Now my final question I guess would be: if I install EW I WILL be forced to do without FP?

BTW great gallery and great pictures

No, I have them both happily running together, though EW keeps asking me if I want it to be my default editor. So far I haven't agreed but it's coming.[;)]

<edit>thanks, I'm working on the EW upgrade to the site</edit>

Didi oh, Didi. It was a summer in Bristol. I still yell out her name now and then!

I rolled out something here, at work, that may be your same issue there.

If anyone tries to access the internet by bypassing our proxy servers, the request is binned. Any traffic that goes through the proxy servers here then is monitored and we also block domains.

Just a thought,

Brian

But if the user has the correct IP address for the proxy in the browser connection settings can you still block a specific browser from connecting?

womble -> RE: Very Annoying (3/16/2007 10:52:30)

I did some reading on the PortableApps forums, and loads of people are having issues with employers blocking access. To be honest I think my only chance is finding some compelling reason why I absolutely must use FF, but I think the chances are slim. I'll just have to do more working from home. Least then I can use whatever I want, although I still have to connect through the VPN through IE6 cos it doesn't work with anything else...*sigh*

jaybee -> RE: Very Annoying (3/16/2007 11:21:36)

I had an email from someone yesterday saying they couldn't pay for something they bought from a client site. Spent ages trying to figure it out. She could buy the goods, stick them in a basket and go to checkout but it wouldn't connect through to Paypal. Turned out her employer blocks it. She went home and checked out fine.

Do you do any web work at work? That's a good enough reason - show them all the tools you use with FireFox (I know there are IE tools, but they don't need to know). That worked for me, am the only user who is allowed to be special, and I also provided a written note saying I would be responsible for upgrades etc [;)]

Now, with my IT Dept department hat on, there are lots of good reasons for stopping users from doing things and blocking sites - on a bad day I think we should just confiscate the machines from some users and hand them an abacus along with a slate and chalk [sm=BangHead.gif]

womble -> RE: Very Annoying (3/16/2007 17:44:12)

I do a tiny bit of web work using their absolutely awful CMS [:'(][:'(][:'(][:'(][:'(]

...but I doubt that would wash with them as the C*ap Managament System is so vile that there are practically no changes you can make to it's awful templates that produces the pile of **** they call a web site. [&o] It looks appalling whichever browser you view it in. It's so bad that I'm embarrassed to admit that I have author/edit rights on the damned thing.

My only hope is that at a team away day a few weeks ago my manager asked for our input on what we should be doing, and said that all ideas would be considered, not matter how off the wall. My plan is to suggest a sub-site for our department that's properly accessible, has a decent (open source) CMS, and has what the visitors to our site really want, rather than the drivel they get served by the IT Dept (there's really no hope for the IT Dept - idiot head of IT thinks marquees and scrolling text are "cool" [&:]) If I can pitch it right, and really plug the accessibility angle etc., then I might be able to persuade the Powers That Be - then I would have a compelling reason to use FF in the office. If I can put a proper proposal together and cost it all, I might just be able to convince the dept's management team. Worth a shot anyhow.

The FF thing aside, I'm just so desperate to inject something interesting into the tedious monotony that is life in the office, and their site is just so unspeakably appalling that words fail me. Apart from the fact I think it would be good for the department, for some unknown reason, the idea of sticking two virtual fingers up at the IT Dept really appeals to me....[sm=EbilGrin.gif]

The only thing to do is immigrate [:D]

We have a great IT Dept, all basically human and all keen on web standards and accessibility (or pay lip service to it to keep me happy). I'm running at more "users per intranet developer" than average and could do with a hand at times. I'm sure we can squeeze you in (and we will let you use FF).

Our budget does not allow for another staff member, but we could probably book you down as software or hardware [:D]

If immigration is out of the question, then pushing a department site would be good, I'm sure if they saw how useful these are you would get everyone onside.

womble -> RE: Very Annoying (3/17/2007 5:46:26)

Well I have a laptop and a passport. [:D]

It wouldn't be so bad if the rest of the IT dept were like the web guy (there's only one of him) who I had a chat with a while back. He's into standards and stuff, but he's hamstrung by the awful CMS they've got themselves tied into. The CMS runs the whole show - adding pages (for which there are a very small selection of exceedingly dull templates), editing, and the whole navigation structure's tied in with it (for which there's link after link after link - as an experiment a while back I tried getting to one particular section visitors to the site would be likely to want if they want info on our dept, using keyboard navigation - it took something like 150 tabs to get there [:o]). You can't add a whole new section to it without using the CMS or the whole thing breaks.

To get anything usable and useful for the dept I think a separate sub-site's the only way to go.
