Ok, you've got me stepping out of my comfort zone...but at least I didn't have to step too awfully far!
I must first make this huge disclaimer to permit ya'll to know that I am not the seasoned veteran as many of you are. In fact, prior to last year at this time, I had never built or published a webpage.
My previous 30 years were spent in the Tool-&-Die Automotive related industry;
that is...up until I was diagnosed with esophageal cancer.
It was only then, after I was forced to go on disability, that I decided to look into something that I could do and develop at home...
So...here I am; sitting at my computer learning HTML and all kinds of other great stuff!!!
I thought you had a great idea for breaking the ice, Jaybee. So, I've decided to throw my first webpage (if that's what ya'd call it), in the pool as well.
I have to laugh when looking at it because, for the yellow colored area along the left side, I used a "Form" field (for lack of knowledge obviously).
Here it is (originally published exactly a year ago).
My First Page
By the way, I didn't happen to check the button links to see where they take you...
I just republished the page today, just as it was in my archives.
Hope I'm at least able to make someone smile

"Respectable" is a very kind and generous description...but hey, we all have to start somewhere, huh?
Actually, at the time that particular version of my website was published, all of the links did go somewhere. However, given the inevitable evolution that aspiring web builders experiences, and since that page hasn't been online for many months, all of those button link destinations have since either depreciated or become obsolete.
But thank you for the cheerful critique anyway.
This was a great idea Jaybee, and I'm looking forward to viewing the other brave souls' first publications.

I'd probably better not show you my 7 year old nephew's first site then. Actually, he did cheat a bit because it's designed by me, so does have doctypes and such like, but as it's got a basic CMS, all the text is his. My first attempts to show him how to use FrontPage, it has to be said produced some interesting results - chain-mail effect badly tiled background, pink content area, with bright yellow text.  It never even got as far as the server, but I'll look and see if the files are still there.
I'll have to have a look later and see if I do have anything of my very first attempt back in the 90s remaining. I know there's nothing left online now, but I may have the original Word converted to HTML files on my other computer somewhere if I dig around a little.

Rather conveniently, there is currently a thread for such off-topicness, on which any subject is allowed - you'll find it loitering with intent in the Lounge area.
<edit>I've actually just realised that my very first CSS layout site is still online! <hehe> I did it for a bit of a laugh, and to have a go at all the CSS stuff I'd been reading about - you can find it here. The basic layout was pilfered from a site with CSS layout templates, and the menu was from here - copying and pasting at it's best. It took me an entire weekend to work out how to get the photographs where I wanted them though, and after that I almost went back to tables again!</edit>

I will definitely have to check out that lounge area; I'm always up for an good conversation.
Howbeit, I hope they serve something other than coffee there...I never have developed a taste for it!

Very cute and commendable first site Womble! You know...you appear a little shorter in your photos than what I had imagined you to be!

First I would like to thank Jaybee and all the rest of you for you walk down memory lane.
I was a newbie and came to this site quite awhile ago to get some help and advice. If I remember right there use to be a forum just for the new ones. Anyway, I quit coming here because the "pros" were often rude and used technical language that I still wasn't use to. It didn't help to tell folks (the pros) at this site that I was new and still learning. I was told to study more and most of the time didn't get an answer to my question.
I learned web design through a correspondence course. I couldn't afford to go to school so I did it at home. A lot of people are learning that way now-a-days. I graduated the course with straight A's but those straight A's didn't prepare for the real web design world. So I found myself in forums asking for help in understanding what I found so easy to do in the books.
After a few tries at other forums and getting the same treatment, I decided to quit trying to build websites. I decided to give it another shot and I've been practicing. I still have a lot of questions and still don't have an instructor to tell me if I'm doing it right or not.
Thanks for taking the time to let the newbies know it's ok to be new. Hopefully, some of you will be an inspiration to a newbie and help create the worlds next greatest web designer.

That's how most of us learned.
In fact the self-taught people are probably way ahead of those that attended courses - most courses I've come across teach out of date techniques.
You can generally learn a lot more by yourself with a few good books and website tutorials.
As far as the technicality goes - it's a horribly technical subject. I've been designing sites professionally (well taking money off people anyway) for four years now and there's not a day goes by when I don't learn something new - I'm not exaggerating there - not a single day goes by. Yesterday and today I'm learning how to create my own, leaner, meaner cubecart template without messing the whole cart up!
You need to be prepared for that continual learning curve (and probably, like most of us feeling continuously slightly behind the curve!) and actually enjoy it. Problems arise for some people when they learn a technique and refuse to move on from it when something better comes along or aren't interested in learning new techniques.

OK, Jaybee. Here is a brand new guy that just signed up a few minutes ago. Me! I've been out of the web site creation arena for quite a few years and I'm quite rusty. 3-In-1 oil won't break me free.
I'm kinda interested in getting up-to-date on the latest and greatest software to make web sites. I've got some old stuff, Web Page Maker, Antenna, Dreamweaver, etc. But as fast as the web changes software is obsolete before they can market the stuff.
Also, any advice on web hosting deals would be appreciated.

In Jaybee's absence I'll stake my 2p's worth. I think the latest thing is actually not using a WYSIWYG like Dreamweaver at all. It's using valid, semantic, accessible markup and CSS instead of table-layouts etc and doing this by hand.
Obviously if you're hand-coding you don't need to bother spending a lot of money on a WYSIWYG - you can use one of the many excellent freebie HTML editors like PSPad, Crimson Editor, HTML-kit or my current favourite Araneae.

you'd be better spending your money on fireworks IMHO THE best app for web graphics (unless your doing a lot of photo work in which case photoshop or similar would be better or in conjunction with) or then if you can't stretch to Adobe fireworks then paintshop pro, or a free one like The Gimp.

Hi!
I just started Web Development Training/Schooling about 4 months ago. I have experimented with different languages for years and decided to learn more! ( I hope!)
Anyway, I came upon an assignment which I am having trouble answering. I am not looking for someone to give me a direct answer, but if anyone has any suggestions of where I could find the answer that would be great!! The question: How do different browsers interpret padding? How do different browsers interpret margins?
I have found many answers and have been looking for hours! But nothing to my complete satisfactory! Help Please!
