Now you learn something new every day.

quote:

Slow down or stop Spam E-mail

Some "web sites" ( for lack of a better word ) use a java script routine to determine your "Default" e-mail address when you visit their "sites," and it doesn't matter if Outlook Express is running or not, as they pull it out of your registry. To stop this, create a "Bogus" e-mail address so if they do get one it won't be real. To do this, in an Outlook window click Tools and then Accounts and follow the steps shown in the little tour that starts when you click Image on the left. Just remember you MUST make sure to select a valid "From:" address from the drop down menu in the "From:" box each time you open the New mail window after you install this "Tweak."

The link to the instructions to fix this are here.

Jaybee,

Have any examples showing that this JS is actually possible? I looked here and didn't see anything other than the fix.

Nope, the quote came from his page. He's an MVP and seems pretty knowledgeable about MS software and glitches. He has an entire list of fixes and workarounds on his site. You want more info, contact him direct.

That article is over 4 years old, and on a site dedicated for Win 95 tips/tricks.

quote:

Therefore, the purpose of 95 Is Alive is to become a repository of Windows 95 tricks, tweaks and fixes, written from the point of view that there are always new Windows 95 users.

Doubt we have much to worry about...

And the problem is? [:D] You mean you're not using Win 95?

Ahh no, sorry, it's not 95
quote:

If you're a Windows 98 or ME user, most of the items mentioned here apply. All of the software mentioned on the Fun Stuff page is Windows 98 / ME compatible.

There's an Expression Web fix on there as well, crikey, I didn't think it took them that long to beta test it.

An IT helpdesk friend told me it doesn't really matter what version OS you use. The flaw is in Outlook Express. Now, he said that quite likely, M$ knew about the flaw but left it in order to push the sale of Outlook. Go figure!

Don't forget that page was published at least 4 years ago. On top of that, a Google search resulted in no evidence that shows this problem even exists.

Maybe it was an exploit awhile ago, but people now shouldn't have to worry about it.
